General Comments

Moraxella consists of two subgenera; Moraxella for the Gram negative rods and Branhamella for the Gram negative cocci. In this program Branhamella is listed separately simply for convenience. Three species (caviae, ovis and cuniculi) form a group that is often called the'false neisseriae' because they do not belong in the genus Neisseria. Some researchers classify these species with Moraxella (Branhamella) catarrhalis while others believe that the differences are too great for such a classification. This program compromises and classifies them under Moraxella as Moraxella (Branhamella) caviae, M(B) ovis and M(B) cuniculi. They are also cross referenced as Neisseria caviae, N. ovis, and N. cuniculi
