Morphology Methylobacillus glycogenes
CELLULAR
Staining Gram negative
Morphology short rods
Motility nonmotile or motile by a single polar flagellum
Specialized structures no capsules no poly-beta-hydroxbutyrate granules no spores
Division
COLONIAL
Solid surface colonies on methanol containing agar are shiny, smooth, raised, entire, white to light yellow and 1-3 mm in diameter after 3 days
Liquid water solulbe pigments not produced

Growth Parameters Methylobacillus glycogenes
PHYSIOLOGICAL
Tropism obligate methylotrophs
Oxygen strict aerobes with respiratory metabolism
pH range pH 6.0-8.0
Temperature optimum 30 oC and 50% of strains grow at 42 oC
Requirements Strict methylotrophs that grow on C1 compounds including methanol and which cannot grow on methane. Some strains require thamine for growth. Most strains do not grow in media supplemented with 3% NaCl
Products utilization of D- fructose varies from strain to strain. nitrate reduced to nitrite. Methyl red, Voges-Proskauer and indole negative. H2S not produced. Ammonia not produced. Most sugars are not used. D-fructose and methylamine may be used.
Enzymes oxidase negative, catalase positive, urease produced
