Morphology Achroanema spp
CELLULAR
Staining
Morphology Cells range from 0.3-0.5 to 5-6.8 um in width; they are arranged in multicellular, colourless, unbranched filaments that are always more or less motile and may be up to 5 mm long. Filaments straight or nearly so or in very loose spirals; in some species, filaments are constricted at cross-walls.
Motility motile
Specialized structures Cells have a delicate, smooth, sometimes distinctly porous cell wall; protoplasm homogeneous, granular, or differentiated into lighter peripheral and darker central portions. Three species appear to form arthrosporelike resting cells; one species contains gas vesicles in older cells. Multiply by fragmentation of filaments
