NEW OFFICE TO PROVIDE POINT OF CONTACT IN CASES
OF SEXUAL MISCONDUCT
Engineeringprof HodaElMaraghywas formally
recognizedasaDistinguishedUniversityProfessor
duringConvocationcelebrations lastOctober.
Dr.HodaElMaraghy, an internationally renowned
researcherand trailblazer for femaleengineers, hasbeen
appointed to the rankof DistinguishedUniversityProfessor.
Asa recentappointee to theOrderof OntarioandCanadian
Academyof Engineering,Dr.ElMaraghyhasbeenhailed forher
pioneering research inmanufacturingsystemsengineering.
Her researchonflexiblemanufacturinghashelped
manufacturersaround theworldadaptand respond tomarket
changesbyallowingcompanies toproducedifferentproducts
with thesameflexiblemanufacturingsystem.
“Dr.ElMaraghyhashada remarkable internationally
recognizedcareerwithmanypositive impacts for industry
and for students,”saidUWindsorpresidentAlanWildeman.
“Itwasaprivilege tobestow thishonouruponher.”
ElMaraghywas formally recognizedatUWindsor’s2016
FallConvocation inOctober.
TheCanadaResearchChair inManufacturingSystemsand
founderanddirectorof theuniversity’s IntelligentManufacturing
SystemsCentre joins the ranksof 38distinguishedUWindsor
professors, sevenof whomareengineers.
“It isagreat recognitionandadistinctivehonorof which
Iamveryproud,”saidElMaraghy, anativeof Egyptwho
became thefirstCanadianwoman toearnadoctorate in
mechanical engineering. “It isparticularlygratifying to
be recognizedbydistinguishedcolleaguesandeminent
international scholars.”
In1994,UWindsorappointedElMaraghydeanof
engineering,makingher thefirstwoman inCanada to receive
the title. Inaddition toherCanadianAcademyof Engineering
fellowship,ElMaraghy isa fellowof theCanadianSocietyof
MechanicalEngineers, theSocietyof ManufacturingEngineers,
and the InternationalAcademy forProductionEngineering,as
wellasaseniormemberof theAmericanSocietyof Mechanical
Engineers.
TheUniversityof Windsorhasadoptedapolicyon
sexualmisconduct, andanewofficial is ready to
provide support for its implementation.
DustyJohnstone tookup thepositionof sexual
misconduct responseandpreventionofficer last September.
Shepromises toadvocate for thoseexperiencingorobserving
sexualmisconduct, andcites threeoptions identified in
thepolicy.
“Peoplecancome tome todisclosean incident,
simply to share their experiences,” she says. “Theycan
reportmisconduct, todocument anevent butmaintain
confidentiality.Or theycanfileacomplaint,whichwill trigger
an investigation.”
She saysherofficewill haveno role in investigating
complaints. “It is itsownarm’s lengthagency,” says
Dr. Johnstone. “I’m there to support theperson through
theprocessand tobeanadvocateon theirbehalf.”
Shealsoplansacontinuing role ineducating thecampus
communityon the issue. “With theBystander Initiativeand
otherprojectshere,Windsorhas reallyset thebar in termsof
education,”shesays. “Weare inaplacenow tomove forward to
producea targeted institutional response toasocietal problem.”
UWindsorpresidentAlanWildeman sayshe isvery
pleased to seeJohnstonecomeonboard tohelp studentsand
thebroader campuscommunityon this important issue.
“Dr. Johnstone iswell-knownacrosscampusand in the
broaderuniversity sector forherwork in thisarea,”he says.
“Weareexceptionally fortunate tohaveher availableasa
resourceaswedevelopappropriatemechanisms todealwith
sexual assault.”
