Anewbuildinggoingupwest of EssexHallwill be
an “exceptional facility” for scientific researchand
innovation, saidUWindsor president AlanWildeman
at the January2017announcement of almost
$15million in federal funding for the facility.
“From cancer research tonewmaterials, there is a
broad rangeof scientific expertise at theUniversityof
Windsor,”Dr.Wildeman said. “This research capacity is
going tobenefit greatly from this investment andwill, in
turn, benefit our region and country.”
OdetteSchool of Business alumnusNavdeepBains
MBA ’01,minister of innovation, science and economic
development, saidhewas “backhome again” tomake the
announcement. TheCanadiangovernmentwill contribute
$14.95million from itsPost-Secondary Institutions Strategic
Investment Fund toward the three-storeyScienceResearch
and InnovationFacility.
Theprovincial governmentwill chip in $2.56million,
with theuniversity responsible for thebalanceof the
projected $30.3-million cost.
Thebuildingwill comprise46,000 square feet.Contractor
AmicoDesignBuildhasbegun initial constructionwork,with
a target completiondateof April 2018.
“This historic investment is adownpayment on the
government’s vision topositionCanada as aglobal centre
for innovation,”Bains said. “ThatmeansmakingCanada
aworld leader in turning ideas into solutions, science into
technologies, skills intomiddle-class jobs and start-up
companies intoglobal successes.”
Thenew spaceswill focus on three areas of research,
saidDeanof ScienceChrisHouser:
• Advancedmaterials, includingnano-technology and
biometrics
• Translationalhealth,bringingdiscoveries from the laboratory
to thebedsidewithaparticularemphasisoncancer
• Medical physics, includingmedical imaging and
diagnostic technologies.
Eachfloorwill be anopen-concept labdevoted toone
of thesefields, allowing for changes as needs evolve,
Dr. Houser said.
“All of the labs areglass, completely transparent,”
he said. “It’s indicativeof the approachwe arehoping
for—collaborative andopen tobringing inpartners.”Houser
added that thenew spaceswill support undergraduate
andgraduate research, whichhe called “themost effective
learning experience for students.”
