Professor Douglas Stephan

Humboldt Research Award
The Humboldt Foundation of Germany has confirmed that
University Professor Douglas Stephan is to be a recipient
of a prestigious 2002 Humboldt Research Award.
Dr. Stephan is a professor of chemistry at the University of
Windsor and holds the Natural Sciences and Engineering
Council / NOVA Chemicals Ltd. Industrial Research Chair in
Polymerization Catalysis. He was nominated by Professor
Gerhard Erker of Müünster University. The award can amount
up to EUR 75,000.
Dr. Stephan's award will be formally conferred at the
"Symposion for Awardees" in Bamberg, Germany, in March
2003, although from September 1 to April 30, 2003, Dr.
Stephan will work in Germany with Professor Erker. He will also
give lectures at various locations in Germany during that time.
Dr. Erker and Dr. Stephan have collaborated for six years.
During that time, Dr. Stephan's graduate students have spent
a few months in Mhnster while students from Mhnster have
come to Windsor.
AUTO21 Network of Centres of Excellence
Announces New Board Chair
James Miller, Senior Vice-President of Corporate Affairs for Honda Canada, is the new chair of AUTO21, the federal Network of Centres of Excellence focusing on automotive research and development with headquarters at the University of Windsor.
Mr. Miller replaces the founding Chair of the Board, Dr. Inge
Hanson, President of Hanson Technologies Management,
whose term as Chair recently concluded.
Mr. Miller also serves as Past Chair of the Canadian
Association of Importers and Exporters and is a Board Member
of the Canadian Automotive Institute at Georgian College.
Windsor International
New inter University Agreements Signed
The University of Windsor has signed new agreements with
universities in other countries to assist graduate students who
want to study at Windsor and to facilitate international
cooperation in research.
The University of Chile in Santiago, Chile, and the
Universite Jean Monnet in St. Etienne, France, are the most
recent universities to sign agreements, which will allow
graduate students from the partner institutions to enrol as
Visiting Research Students at the University of Windsor for
one or two semesters.
Current arrangements are :for students from the
University of Chile will be working with Dr. Ricardo
Aroca in Chemistry & Biochemistry; students from the
Universite Jean Monnet will be working with Dr. Jerry
Sokolowski in Mechanical, Automotive & Materials
Engineering.
The University of Windsor has signed an agreement of
cooperation with the Emanuel's Institute for Biochemical
Physics of the Russian Academy of Science in Moscow.
This agreement will facilitate the exchange of ideas and
personnel and will enhance the existing colloborations in the
area of imaging research and applied solid state physics.

Names Gordon Grace
Director of Athletics and Recreational Services
Gordon Grace of Mount Allison University was appointed
Director of the Division of Athletics and Recreational
Services effective July 1.
As the Director of Athletics and Recreational Services, Mr.
Grace will oversee the operation of Lancer Athletics,
Campus Recreation, the St. Denis Athletic and Community
Centre and the Green Shield of Canada Sport Therapy
Clinic.
A native of Chatham, Ontario, Mr. Grace has an extensive
background in coaching, sport management, event
management, business and fund raising.

A Wine and Cheese Reception was held in the quadrangle between Dillon Hall and Chrysler Hall Tower on Monday, September 23, 2002 between 4.30 - 6.30 pm to welcome all the new faculty, librarians and staff to campus.
