Nurses Shared Healthcare Practices at International Conference

Explaining why women from many parts of the world are reluctant to seek preventative treatment for breast cancer was one of the 60 agenda items as more than 200 health care professionals from across Ontario and the U.S. attended the Faculty of Nursing’s Second Biennial Nursing Conference at the University of Windsor.

Lucia Yiu, associate professor in UWindsor’s Faculty of Nursing, presented the findings of her study, Breast Health Practices Among Ethno-cultural Women in Windsor-Essex County. Yiu interviewed 20 women from the Middle East, Africa and Asia to explore their perceptions and understanding of breast cancer, as well as their breast health practices, with the aim of developing culturally sensitive prevention strategies.

Dale Rajacich, associate professor in Nursing, presented findings from her study on the effects of treatment delays on women with breast cancer.

Additional conference topics included women’s health, cardiovascular nursing specialties, mental health, infection control and community public health.
