Day Of Action To Reaffirm Commitment To Social Justice and Equality The Faculty of Education held its first annual Anti-Discrimination Day of Action, a proactive, professional learning day of engagement for all teacher candidates. Students had an opportunity to participate in workshops addressing such issues as immigrant experiences, anti-racism, cultural sensitivity, heterosexism, inclusive language, Aboriginal issues, and accessibility for people with disabilities and inclusive language – vital topics for teachers at all levels. Education Dean Pat Rogers said the sessions provided beginning teachers with an essential and invigorating opportunity to listen, share, and reflect on issues of social responsibility and equity in education, and especially in their teaching practice. Alongside the formal workshops and keynote addresses, Education students presented a diversity exhibition for the benefit of the University community. The event was presented by the Faculty of Education, in co-operation with the Education Society and the Teacher Education Liaison Committee (TELC). The keynote addresses were given by Dr. Rinaldo Walcott, author of the critically acclaimed 1997 collection of essays, Black Like Who? and Canada Research Chair on Social Justice and Cultural Studies at the University of Toronto/Ontario Institute for Studies in Education.
