Morphology | Actinobacillus |
CELLULAR |
Staining | Gram-negative. Not acid-fast. Exhibit irregular staining. Small amounts o extracellular slime may be demonstrated in wet India ink preparations |
Morphology | Cells spherical, oval or rod-shaped, 0.4 + 0.1 x 1.0 + 0.4 um. The cells are mostly bacillary but are interspersed with coccal elements that often lie at the pole of a bacillus giving a characteristic "Morse code" form. Occasionally longer forms occur up to 6 um, especially on media containing glucose or maltose. The cells are arranged singly, in pairs or, more rarely, in chains |
Motility | Nonmotile. |
Specialized structures | Do not form endospores |
Division |
COLONIAL |
Solid surface | Cultures are very sticky on primary isolation; colonies may be difficult to remove completely from the agar surface. Surface cultures have low viability and die in 5-7 days All species except one can grow on MacConkey agar |
Liquid |
Growth Parameters | Actinobacillus |
PHYSIOLOGICAL |
Tropism | Chemoorganotrophs |
Oxygen | Facultative anaerobes having a fermentative type of metabolism |
pH | |
Temperature | Optimum temperature, 37`C; temperature range for growth, 20-42`C. |
Requirements | Growth has been reported only on complex media; minimal nutritional requirements are unknown. |
Products | Acid but no gas is produced within 24 h from glucose and sucrose. Dulcitol, inositol and inulin are not fermented. Other carbohydrates may be fermented with acid but no gas Methyl red test is negative. Nitrates are reduced to nitrites. Indole is not produced |
Enzymes | Positive for B-galactosidase All species except one are positive for urease |
