A Message From Stan Cunningham, President Retirees' Association

I was deeply honored to be voted in, October 27, as President of the Retirees' Association, and I hope that I will succeed in fulfilling your expectations.

There are now about 250 retirees, and within two years that number will reach close to 300--more than half the number of active faculty and librarians. The Retirees' Association itself is relatively short lived: It began in 1990 through the vision and efforts of Norm Shklov (Mathematics), Bill Phillips (Economics) and Ralph Cowan (Business Administration). Since then it has evolved from an informal monitoring group, replete with newsletter, into a more formally structured organization.

Given that pace of growth and our intention to increase dues-paying membership, I believe it is important that we continue to refine the sorts of structures and practices that we will need in order to make our group heard, heeded and understood. Our disappointment over the recent disproportionate disbursement of the excess surplus, I think, underscores the point that we need to improve our skills in the business of reviewing all areas of pension and benefits arrangements, and in vigilantly protecting our interests. Just as importantly, we want to remind the University that we constitute a repertoire of wisdom, talents and experience that we are willing to share with the University of Windsor.

In 1999, I and your Executive will be working hard to develop and improve our formal linkages with the Faculty Association and with the University of Windsor. In this regard, I am greatly encouraged by the quality and commitment of our Executive.

Let me take this opportunity to wish you season's greetings, and to extend to all of you, on behalf of your Executive, our warmest wishes for health and happiness during 1999.

President Ross Paul Addresses Retirees' Fall General Meeting

The Fall General Meeting of the Faculty, Librarian and Administrator Association was held on October 27, 1998, at 2.00 p.m. in the Hoffman Auditorium, IONA College. This was the first time that a President of the University of Windsor attended the meeting and addressed the Retirees' Association.

In his remarks Dr. Paul paid tribute to all the retired faculty and acknowledged their dedication, service and contributions in building a fine university. He stated that they should be proud of their accomplishments, feel part of the university family and continue to be involved to see that the programs they built are re-invigorated. He said, as a newcomer to campus, he is reaping the benefits of others who worked hard to make the UW a fine institution.

He briefly touched on the financial problems, as well as the inability to hire new faculty in a competitive environment. In addition, he stressed the need to focus and redirect our efforts and invited comments on his Strategic Directions Position Paper. Dr Paul expressed his desire to continue to meet with the Retirees' Executive Committee and seek their wisdom and counsel. He congratulated all those who were present at the meeting for their interest in the association and the university. He hoped to get to know all better in time.
