8. Report of Social Committee - Dr. John LaGaipa
John briefly described the social activities for the year - Spring Annual Dinner in March at St. Clair College and the Retirees Picnic at the home of Bob and Jean Chandler in August. He appreciated their graciousness in hosting the picnic. He was working on the arrangements for the March 1999 dinner and explained some of the problems associated with it in keeping the costs down and also maintaining quality of the food.
9. Report of the Bursary Committee - Dr. Cormac Smith
Dr. Smith stated that Ms Cuthbert from the Students Awards Office covered all aspects of the report and he had no further comments.
10. Faculty Contract Settlement - Pension Surplus
Datta Pillay briefly reported on the recent Faculty Contract Settlement and the distribution of the $ 22.6 million surplus. It was noted that the Faculty Association again neglected the recommendations for a fair and equitable distribution of the surplus. At the Faculty Association general body meeting, on April 21, 1998 two motions from the retirees association requesting a fair and equitable distribution of pension surplus and indexing the pension of retirees on the MG plan were approved. However, both the Contract Committee and Negotiating Committee of the Faculty Association did not put forward the retirees request.
It was further pointed out that a Group grievance of 8 retirees was launched on September 16, 1998 with the Faculty Association. There was some heated discussion and some confusion if this was a grievance by the retirees association. Clarification was provided that this was a private members group grievance.
The following motion was presented by Norm Shklov seconded by Joan Hackett. "That any action taken in the name of the Retirees Association be brought to the Retirees Executive Committee for endorsement". There were many arguments against this motion , while a few spoke in favour. The motion failed by a vote of 25 to 10.
11. Election of Office Bearers - The Executive Committee proposed one name for each office and invited additional nominations from the floor. On the motion of Ripu Singh seconded by Pat Taylor further nominations were closed. And the proposed slate was accepted as presented.
