Retirees' Association Awards First Two Bursaries

The University Student Awards Office forwarded several applications from qualified students for the Retirees Bursaries. At a meeting of the Executive Committee, the list of applications were considered. The Committee recommends the following candidates for the two awards, ranked in order. A third candidate was listed as an alternate, in case, one of them is unable to accept the award.

Tributes to Bill Phillips and Edwin Habib

At the Retirees Executive Committee meeting on December 3, 1998, a motion to acknowledge the contributions of the above two persons was unanimously adopted.

Bill Phillips was appreciated for his long service as one of the three founding members of the Retirees' Association and serving as the founding editor of the Retirees Newsletter for the first 25 issues. During this period he was responsible for the evolution of the newsletter from a one page document to a ten-page informative newsletter. For many years he served as Treasurer and as the person responsible for membership drive.

Ed Habib also played a major role on the Retirees' Association Executive and completed two years as President of the Association and this past year as Past President. Ed also served on the Faculty Association Pension and Benefits Committee for many years.

Meet Your New Executive Members

Stan Cunningham - President - first came to Assumption University in 1961 to the Philosophy Department, where he later became Department Head.

In the early 80's he laterally transferred to the Communications Department and made a major contribution. During his career, he also served as the President of the Faculty Association in 1972-73. He was a member of the University Committee on Voluntary Retirement and the Pension Committee and Chaired the University Anomalies Committee. Stan's fairness objectivity, and his voice of reason earned him much respect and was always sought out to serve on committees. He took early retirement in 1997.

Alan Metcalfe - Director -joined the Faculty of Human Kinetics in 1969 as a professor of sports history in the Kinesiology Department. Dr. Metcalfe was a very active member on several major university committees - Senate, Board of Governors, University Government Committee to name a few. He also served as President of the Faculty Association in 1979-80. His reputation as a fearless critic and spokesman, with respect to the welfare of university, upholding policies and procedures in any forum, be it in the Senate, Board of Governors, Faculty Association or any committee he served is a testimony to his commitment to the University.

Professor Phyllis Nolan - Treasurer -joined Assumption University in 1959 as Professor and Head of the Department of Home Economics. She continued in that position in the University of Windsor for a total of 19 years. After the Department of Home Economics was disbanded in the late 80's, she was laterally transferred to the Faculty of Human Kinetics. Prior to 1970, she served on the Senate as Department Head under the old rules. She took an early retirement in 1991.
