BOARD OF GOVERNORS APPROVE STRATEGIC DIRECTION FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF WINDSOR TO YEAR 2004

The University of Windsor in the new millennium will be a more focussed institution with a much stronger commitment to graduate studies and research. In the next five years, Windsor will strive to be much more than a regional university. Instead, it will build on the advantages of its location and culture to attract a much larger proportion of its students from other parts of Ontario, Canada and the world.

That is the vision contained in a strategic directions and action plan for the University of Windsor that was approved by the Board of Governors today, setting the stage for decisions for the hiring of new faculty, the strengthening of certain educational and research programs, reinforcing the university's marketing and recruitment thrust and more.

The plan, entitled "The Best of Both Worlds" was written by President Ross Paul. It follows months of intensive consultation and response to his position paper released in June of this year. Last week, the document was presented to the university Senate, which approved all of its recommendations without dissent. It will now be widely distributed on campus and in the community.

"This document reflects both a strong affirmation of the ideas in the original document plus some significant additions to those ideas that came out of consultations with groups on campus and in the community," Dr. Paul said.

"The document's title takes its cue from Windsor itself, which offers the best of both worlds as a smaller friendly centre adjacent to a major North American city," he said.

Subtitled "A Blueprint for the Affirmation and Renewal of the University of Windsor," it maps out, in a very clear and public fashion, a new vision for the University of Windsor to be achieved by the year 2004, plus the steps and timetable to make the vision a reality.

"The Best of Both Worlds affirms that Windsor can and must find the ideal balance on a range of important fronts," the president says.

The top items for action in the document are student recruitment and marketing, and academic planning and faculty renewal in designated areas such as Computer Science where first-year enrolment has doubled over the past year and total enrolment is expected to more than double in three years. In the document, Dr. Paul notes the university is facing a challenge of attracting, keeping and maintaining the best faculty in what is predicted to be a highly competitive environment in the next few years.
