Thousands of people descended on University of Windsor stadium to get a glimpse of the athletes who were heading off to Beijing, China, as the school and the city played host to the 2008 Canadian Olympic Track and Field Trials.
And thanks to the efforts of hundreds of volunteers and the local organizing committee who spent months tirelessly preparing for the event, it was a resounding success.
UWindsor athletes performed admirably throughout the weekend. Ryan McKenzie took first place in the 5,000-metre event, while Jamie Adjetey-Nelson captured the silver medal in the decathlon. However, neither athlete earned the required time or number of points to secure a trip to China.
For the first two days of the event Adjetey-Nelson was clearly the local fan favourite and used the home field to his advantage, often urging the fans to clap and cheer before he started his events. A number of supporters wore red shirts that said “Mission Possible” on the front and “Jamie 8000” on the back, in reference to the 8,000 points he needed to secure a spot on the team.
