Professor
Howard Abrams
(B.A. University of Michigan, 1963; J.D. University of Chicago,
1966)
has been a full time faculty member of the University of Detroit School
of Law since 1977. Professor Abrams began his legal career as a public defender
in the city of Chicago. He then engaged in private practice for eight years with
a Chicago law firm before entering law teaching. Professor Abrams pursues scholarly
interests in the copyright and entertainment law areas. He is a former Trustee
of the Copyright Society of the U.S.A. He has recently published two major law
review articles, one a historical overview of copyright doctrine in the courts,
the second a critical look at copyright law.
Terry Berg
University of Detroit Mercy School of Law
Professor Myra J. Tawfik
(B.A. McGill, 1981; LL.B. B.C.L., McGill, 1985; LL.M. Queen-Mary
College, University of London,1989), Member of the Law Society of Upper Canada,
formerly of the Bar of Quebec. Professor Tawfik is a member of the Academic Co-ordinating
Committee of the Centre for Innovation Law & Policy, Faculty of Law, University
of Toronto, and is the Executive Director of the Canadian-American Research Centre
for Law and Policy, Faculty of Law, University of Windsor. Professor Tawfik teaches
courses in The Law of Confidential Information, Trademark Law, and Internet Law.
Her primary research interests lie in the areas of copyright law and trade related
aspects of intellectual property rights.
Donald H. MacOdrum
received his B.A. in Chemistry and Physics in 1963 at Queen’s
University, his LL.B. from the University of Toronto in 1966 and his call to
the Bar in 1968. He is a partner in the Lang Michener law firm in their Toronto
office. Mr. MacOdrum has been in practice since 1968, specializing in civil litigation
in the area of intellectual property litigation, and in particular patent law
litigation.
Peter Wells:
B. Sc., Queen’s University, 1973; LL.B, Queen’s University,
1976; Call to Bar, Ontario, 1978. Mr. Wells is a member of the Lang Michener's
Intellectual Property Group. He practices in the area of technology litigation
and civil litigation relating to intellectual property, including patents and
trade section. He has experience as counsel in all aspects of computer litigation,
including hardware, software and systems integration disputes.
Professor Jessica Litman
(B.A. 1974; Reed College; M.F.A. 1978, Southern Methodist University;
J.D. 1983 Columbia). While in law school, Professor Litman was Notes and Comments
Editor of the Columbia Law Review. In 1983-84, she clerked for Judge Betty B.
Fletcher of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Professor
Litman taught at the University of Michigan for six years before joining the
Wayne faculty in 1990. She teaches courses in Torts, Copyright, Trademarks and
Internet Law. In 1989, Professor Litman was elected to the Board of Trustees
of the Copyright Society of the U.S.A.
Professor John Rothchild
(J.D., University of Pennsylvania Law School, 1986, Magna Cum
Laude, Order of the Coif., A.B. Princeton University, 1979, cum Laude Politics)
began teaching at Wayne State Law School in the Fall of 2001. From 1991 to 2001,
he worked at the Federal Trade Commission’s Bureau of Consumer Protection,
specializing in law enforcement efforts addressing Internet-based fraud and online
compliance issues. From 1998 to 1999, he was engaged in research and writing
as a Fellow at the University of Chicago Law School, where he received the Victor
H. Kramer Foundation fellowship. From 1987 to 1991, he was an associate in the
Washington, D.C. law firm of Bredhoff & Kaiser, representing labor unions
and pension plans. He clerked for the Hon. Arlin M. Adams, U.S. Court of Appeals
for the Third Circuit, from 1986 to 1987.
Professor Katherine White
is a graduate of Princeton University, University of
Washington School of Law (J.D.) And George Washington University National Law
Center (LL.M.). Professor White served as a law clerk to the Honourable Randall
R. Rader of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and also as intellectual
property counsel to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers prior to joining the faculty
in the Fall of 1996.
Professor Sukanya Pillay
B.A.(Windsor), LL.B.(Windsor), LL.M.(NYU), of Osgoode Hall, Barrister
& Solicitor. Professor Pillay teaches Administrative Law,
Contracts, Judicial Review and Internet Law. Her research interests include international
humanitarian law and conflict resolution as well as the use of video in
promoting human rights.

Professor Jessica Litman
The seminar
will examine the application of current laws to the Internet and a variety of
proposals for new or revised laws to regulate the developing Global Information
Infrastructure. Topics will include recent applications of defamation, copyright,
wire fraud and criminal threat laws to Internet activities; current proposals
from both government and private sources for new legal regulation or revision
of current intellectual property; communications; criminal laws; the problems
that flow from asserting national laws in a medium with no national borders. The
assigned texts will include conventional documents and research material available
on-line. Students do not need their own computers to take the seminar, since it
will be possible to complete all assignments using the Law Library's computer
resources. A substantial research paper and a significant in-class presentation
are required.
