LAW OF ELECTRONIC COMMERCE LEX 7828
WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY LAW SCHOOL
Professor John Rothchild

This course addresses the new legal and policy issues that arise when businesses and consumers use the Internet to conduct their commercial transactions. These issues span a broad range of subject matters, including jurisdiction, unfair competition, torts, dispute resolution, contracting, privacy, taxation, and consumer protection. The novel characteristics of the online communications medium - such as its ability to facilitate near-instantaneous communication, at near-zero marginal cost; the difficulties of limiting access to certain types of online communication; and its reliance on electronic rather than paper documents - raise novel legal issues. A competent lawyer must be comfortable with the technology, and must be able to address these issues. If your practice will include advising or litigating on behalf of businesses that make commercial use of the Internet, you will benefit from this course.
