Researcher's Discovery Gives Clues to Earth's Origins One of the world's most prestigious geological publications recognized the fossil discovery made by a University of Windsor professor as one of Ontario's most significant. The academic journal Geology noted the find of Denis Tetreault, a paleontologist with the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences. The fossils were embedded in a quarry in the Bruce Peninsula, which ultimately led to the discovery of the Eramosa Lagerstätte, a large stretch of rock that contains fossilized soft-bodied organisms estimated to be 425 million years old. Such discoveries as these are significant, Tetreault said, because they provide a clearer picture of ancient environments and can lead to greater knowledge of how the planet reacts to environmental changes. “In order to understand environmental change and how life reacts to it, you have to understand the past,” says Tetreault. “These windows become very important in piecing together the changes the earth has gone through.” |
