The Atlas V Rocket

Atlas V Family

The Atlas V is a member of the newest family of rockets, its developed to be powerful and versatile. This new generation of rockets are designed to be expendable and highly configurable, the Atlas V has 20+ different configurations. The Atlas V is a multi-stage rocket, it has a main booster (CCB) which is fuelled with liquid hydrogen/oxygen and is capable of having as many as 5 solid rocket boosters (SRB) strapped to the CCB. Its second stage is either 1 or 2 centaur rockets, also fuelled with liquid oxygen/hydrogen. The payload bay comes in two sizes, for small and large cargo. The Atlas V has a three letter designation; the first is the fairing(cargo bay) size either 4 or 5, which is the size in meters, the second digit is the number of SRBs, which can be from 0 to 5 the last digit designates how many centaur engines it carries, either 1 or 2. Below is a table of the possible configurations, and the as of now un-flown heavy lift configuration, which has 3 CCBs.
