Community Forum, June 3, 2005

Dr. Nombuso Dlamini, Dr. Uzo Anucha and representatives from approximately 50 community organizations from the Windsor-Essex area launched the research project Intergenerational Links and Community Engagement of Youth from African Communities at a breakfast forum. After an initial welcome from Dr. Pat Rogers, Dean of the Faculty of Education at the University of Windsor, Dr. Dlamini explored the ways that community engagement enables youth to develop social capital within their communities, as well as factors that appear to limit and facilitate youth participation in community organizations. Rachel Olivero, the diversity officer for the Greater Essex County District School Board, facilitated groupsĄŻ discussion and sharing of their expertise regarding the participation of youth of African descent in local community. These groups focused on issues that enhance or limit participation, the effects of participation, intergenerational aspects of community participation, and issues related to the methodology and nature of the current study. Discussion Questions. Dr. Uzo Anucha then delineated the opportunities for community involvement and input in the study. Dr. John Lyanga of the African Community Organization of Windsor closed the session with a vote of thanks. While many organizations have already outlined the ways in which they would like to participate, we welcome organizations interested in the study to contact us. Thanks to Katherine Simon for these pictures of the event.
