ALAN WILDEMAN
President and Vice-Chancellor
Therearemany things to sayabout auniversity.Universitieshavea longhistoryof enabling
people to address the challenges and opportunities in society. There are stories about great
discoveries that aremaking a difference in people’s lives, about how technology is changing
theway information isdisseminated, or about howathletics andentrepreneurshipare shaping
tomorrow’s leaders. These and other stories are exciting and certainly justify the headlines
they attract.
At the same time, along with all of these eye-catching stories and headlines, there is the
foundationof what universities do that ultimately enables everything else. It is the foundation
of teaching and learning. In this issue of VIEW, we go back to these roots, and explore how
they are shaping the future of theUniversity of Windsor and the lives of our students before
and after theygraduate.
In this edition, there are, of course, snapshots of some of the research and scholarship
happeningoncampus, includinga storyabout recentUWindsoradditions to theRoyal Society
of Canada.Butmuchof what youwill read isaglimpse into theheart and soul of teachingand
learning. It is a truism that any organization is about its people, and it iswith great pride that
we can showcase someof thepeoplewho are continually reinforcingour foundation.
WhenFacultyof LawProf. JasminkaKalajdzicdescribes theexperienceof seeing students
immersed in thematerial and asking hard questions as being “intoxicating,” andKinesiology
Prof. KevinMilne says that his whole approach to teaching is tomake sure his students do
not feel like “anumber,” you start toget a senseof how strong thededication to teaching and
learning is at theUniversityof Windsor.
Our university’s commitment to teachinghas been its royal jelly throughout its history. It is
thegreat concoction that binds all disciplines together in thecommongoal of improving lives.
For VIEWerswho are alumni, I hope that these—andother stories in this issue—make you
wish, if even for amoment, that you coulddo it all over again.
