formedaCo-operativeDevelopment Committee
to strengthen thepost-secondary educational
opportunities inWindsor, EssexandKent Counties.
The committeewill combine the strengths andbest
practices of both institutions to achieve newpathways
for students, articulation agreements, operatingprocesses
and the collaborationof services in the newdowntown
Windsor campus footprint.
The committee includes administration fromboth
the university and college. Suggestions arewelcomed
regardingpossible initiatives andopportunities thatmay
benefit both institutions.
UWindsor’s then-actingprovost, Dr. RobertOrr, noted
that, “This co-operative initiativewill have anongoing
impact to the post-secondary educational experience
for existingUniversityof Windsor andSt. Clair College
students and future recruitment efforts.”
ST. CLAIR AND UWINDSOR ESTABLISH CO-OPERATIVE
DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE
Ron Joyce, chair of the JoyceFoundation, has
announceda $10-million gift in support of students
at theUniversityof Windsor. The gift, unveiled
September 25,will enable the creationof the
EdLumleyBursary, in recognitionof Chancellor
Lumley’s commitment to theUniversityand the
Windsor-Essex community.
Thebursarywill provideamaximumof $8,000ayear
throughout four yearsof study to students fromWindsor-
Essexwho, becauseof financial hardship,might not otherwise
beable toattenduniversity.Anumberof awardswill be
offeredannually,making thebursary themost significant
student support endowment inUWindsorhistory.
PresidentAlanWildeman said that thedonation isan
extraordinarygift in support of students. “Wearedeeply
grateful toRonJoyceandhis foundation, andare indebted to
ChancellorLumley fornever forgettinghis roots inWindsor-
Essexandhisbelief in thepowerof education. I also thank
the facultyand staff who,withour chancellor, helpeddesign
theEdLumleyBursary toensure that it identifies students in
high schoolswhohavefinancial needandadesire togo to
university, and that it includesmentoring support.”
A largeportionof theUniversity’s new Innovation
Centre—whichwill feature spacededicated to support
student entrepreneurs—will benamedThe Joyce
EntrepreneurshipCentre.
TheJoyceFoundation isaprivate, family foundation
createdby thecelebratedCanadianentrepreneurwhose
philosophy reflectshisdeep-rooted senseof responsibility
togiveback tocommunity.
“TheJoyceFoundation isdedicated to supporting the
social, economicandemotionalwell-beingof childrenand
youthbyempowering them todevelop intohealthy, confident,
independent contributors toCanadian society,” saidJoyce
at theSeptember event.
“I ampleased toname thisbursary inhonourof
EdLumley, amanwhonot onlyhadadistinguishedcareer
in theprivate sector, butwhoalsodevotedagreat deal of his
life topublic service inCanada.”
Lumley added that, “Wewant to identify students
whohave the potential to excel not only academically
but in the arts, athletics, student government, and through
community service.We know these students have the
potential to impact society in a positiveway and this is
a chance for them to focus on their studies and activities
andworry less about finances.”
