TheUniversityof Windsor has unveiled thedesign
of another element in its newdowntown campus.
TheBoardof Governors approved constructionof
thebuildingon the siteof the formerTunnel Bar-B-Q
property in lateNovember as part of theUniversity’s overall
Capital TransformationPlan.
The structure, in addition to the adjacentWindsor
Armouries building, will be home to the School for
CreativeArts (SOCA), comprisedof the film,music and
visual arts programs.
The downtown campuswill also feature themove
of the School of SocialWork and theCentre for Executive
andProfessional Education into the renovated site of the
former
Windsor Star
building.
The School of CreativeArtswas created through
amerger of the School of Music, the School of Visual
Arts and the filmproductionprogram. The new facilities
will provide an exciting creative complex for its students,
and enable the school to envisionnew interdisciplinary
programs that buildupon themerger.
“There is great benefit in stronger ties
betweenuniversities andurban centres,
particularly for education andoutreach in
the arts, humanities, and social sciences,”
saysUWindsor President AlanWildeman.
“The downtownprojects integrate
important historic landmarks into 21st-
century learning, outreach and creative
hubs for our students, faculty and staff.”
The newbuilding, designedbyCS&P
Architects Inc., will be a 22,335-square-
foot, single-storey structure. Itwill
house learning studios and editing suites
formedia andfilm studies, workshops
formetal andwoodworking, digital
fabrication labs and a printmaking studio.
Construction is slated for completion
inAugust 2016.
The downtown campus initiative
will eventually include the transformation
of the formerGreyhoundbus depot and
nearbyChathamStreet Parkette.
