One of the longest standing
and most popular traditions
of the Alumni Association is the Annual Alumni & Friends
Golf Tournament. This year, $10,000 of the net proceeds
was donated to scholarships in
memory of Jeanne Morris, who
died last year. The donation is
matched by the Ontario Trust
for Student Support Program
(OTSS) for a total contribution
of $20,000.
Morris, a former member of
the Alumni Affairs staff, was a
lead organizer of the tournament
for many years – and although
she never golfed – she was
passionate about ensuring its
success year after year.
The tournament has been
held at a number of venues throughout Essex County –

the Alumni Association Board of Directors. “We are proud
to have supported all of these excellent requests and glad
to see so many great initiatives,” he adds. “Currently we are
refining the procedures we use to make funding decisions
more efficiently.”
“I don’t think people realize just how extensive
our awards program is,” says Jim Minello, chair of the
Associations’ awards committee. “In addition to all of our
first-year student awards, we annually sponsor, along with
the Toronto Chapter, the Robert J. Humphrey Award for
two business students valued at $6,500 each, the Alumni
Drama Award, as well as five in-course scholarships valued
at $500 each, and others.”
The Association has also supported two major capital
projects in recent years. It donated $500,000 towards
the artificial turf of Alumni Field at the new stadium and
contributed $50,000 toward the naming of the Alumni
Association Group Learning Suite in the new medical
education facility.

programs endorsed by the Alumni Association, go to
past several years, the Ambassador Golf Club. “It keeps
things fresh” says Alumni Affairs director Susan Lester.
“Many of our participants play every year, so it’s nice to
change things up now and again.
It’s also good to see that the
tradition is being passed down to
a new generation of alumni and
friends.”
“The support from our
golfers and sponsors is
tremendous”, said Mike
Bates, chair of the organizing
committee. Says Bates: “Lead
sponsors, such as Telus and TD
Insurance – Meloche Monnex
have been our partners in support
of this event for many years. The
proceeds are used by the Alumni
Association to support both alumni and student initiatives
as well as those within faculties and departments.”
