William (Bill) Miles
Miles led the Lancer Golf Team as head coach for 16 years during the 1970s and
1980s. During his tenure, the team won three OUAA golf medals, four OUAA silvers
and a number of tournament titles. His focus was not on the technical aspects of
the game; rather, he concentrated on teaching his athletes how to score low and win.
He was presented with the Gino Fracas Award in 1987 as the University’s coach of
the year.
SPORT ACHIEVEMENT
Michael “Max” Karcz ’53 – Athlete and Coach
A three-sport athlete - basketball, football and track & field - Karcz was a top student
athlete at Patterson Collegiate Institute. He led teams to WSSA, WOSSA and All-
Ontario Basketball Championships. In 1949, he was selected for the All-City High
School Football team and was the first recipient of the Royal Arcanum Award as
the top high school athlete in Windsor. He won numerous medals in track & field in
the sprints and jumps. He went on to play basketball for Assumption College and
earned a teaching certificate. He spent 30 years teaching at Vaughan Road Collegiate
(Toronto), Walkerville Collegiate, Forster S.S. and Vincent Massey S.S. He coached
basketball, football and wrestling teams to a number of city titles as well as multiple
undefeated seasons.
Margaret Sidoroff-Canty ’99, ’08 - Boxing
One of the most accomplished Canadian female boxers, Sidoroff-Canty went
undefeated as an amateur (13-0), before bursting onto the professional scene. She
won her first professional bout by TKO in just the second round. She retired with a
8-0-1 (split decision) record, and three KOs. She took home three world titles and
was recognized as one of the best female boxers in the world. Still involved with the
sport, she has continued to coach. Achieving her Level V certification, she has been
a Canadian National Team Coach and runs the Border City Boxing Club.
TEAM ACHIEVEMENT
Coached by Hank Biasetti the 1958/59 Lancers Basketball team had a respectable
12-10 overall record. In addition, the team put together nine conference victories
and had a good playoff run, winning the OQAA championship.
