NAFTA at TEN: Harmonization and Legal Transformation Conference

The Canadian-American Research Centre for Law and Policy held a conference in June at the law school sponsored by Windsor's Faculty of Law, the University of Detroit Mercy Law School, the Centre for Innovation Law and Policy, the University of Toronto Faculty of Law and the Law Foundation of Ontario to examine issues arising from the 10 year anniversary of NAFTA.

Distinguished guests and speakers from the United States and Mexico were present participating in a lively discussion focusing on the theme of the conference: Harmonization and Legal Transformation.

w i p i t members were on hand to see our very own Professors Todd Weiler and Myra Tawfik address issues of interest to the IP/IT community.

Prof. Weiler opened the conference with a paper examining the current state of the law on e-commerce issues as well as set the tone of the debate with the provocative thesis that technology drives legal policy.

Myra Tawfik, a former Associate Dean of the Law School, and the driving force behind IP/IT at Windsor Law School, examined the recent judicial topography in Canada through the lens of intellectual property law.

NAFTA at 10 provided the perfect thematic backdrop to examine how legal jurisdictions across regions and around the world grapple with the challenges posed by technological advancement.

Watch for more w i p i t commentary of other IP/IT related fora in the months ahead.
