The
newly constituted J.D./LL.B. Advisory Board recently held its initial
meeting at the University of Windsor Law School. The members of
the board elected Peter Farmer '74, CEO of Denison Energy, as the
Chair of the Board. The meeting focused principally on three topics:
Curriculum, Recruitment, and Career Services. Various faculty and
staff from the University of Windsor and University of Detroit Mercy
Law Schools presented
board members with
information on the current state of the program in each of these
areas and the challenges being faced. A useful and frank discussion
followed each presentation. Dean Bruce Elman noted: "The discussion
was extraordinarily useful. It is always good to get a frech perspective
on the challenges we face in developing this program."
The joint J.D./LL.B.
Program was established in 2000 under a Collaboration Agreement
between the University of Windsor Faculty of Law and the University
of Detroit Mercy School of Law. This Collaborative Agreement called
for the establishment of an Advisory Board. The Advisory Board is
composed of academics, lawyers, and members of the judiciary from
both Canada and the United States. The purpose of the board is to
provide the parties with important guidance on academic matters
and/or matters relating to the legal profession. The location of
the meetings will rotate between the two law schools and the Chair
of the Board will also rotate from a representative of one school
to a representative of the other. Dean Elman noted: "The exceptional
quality of the individuals we were able to attract to serve on the
advisory Board speaks volumes for the importance that we, and they,
place on the program and the importance of trans-border legal education
generally."
The meeting of the J.D./LL.B.
Advisory Board was followed by a Welcome Reception in order to provide
board members with the opportunity to meet and speak with the J.D./LL.B.
students as well as the faculty members and staff of both law schools.
Presently, there are 75 students in the joint program, including
34 first-year, 20 second-year and 21, third-year students.
