Each year the Odette School of Business acknowledges the research productivity of its faculty through the
Odette Research Awards. The awards are given in two categories: the OdetteNewResearcher Award for
pre-tenure faculty and the Odette Research Excellence Award for tenured faculty. The OdetteNewResearcher
Award is based on the previous year’s published output while the Odette Research Excellence Award is based
on the previous three years’ publishedwork.

Dr.Ma joined theOdetteSchool ofBusiness
in2005, andnowhe isAssociateProfessor
ofManagementand theAreaChair for the
ManagementArea.Prior to joining theOdette, he
wasan instructoratMcGillUniversity,Faculty
ofManagement.He isalsoavisitingprofessor
at theLingnanCollege,SunYat-senUniversity
(China), andat theSchool ofManagement,Harbin
InstituteofTechnology (China), andSchool of
Business,RenminUniversityofChina.
Dr.Ma’sresearchreflectsagrowing interest
amongscholars toward interdisciplinary
andmulti-level research.Hisresearch focus
integrates literature fromorganizational
behaviorandhumanresourcemanagement,
cross-culturalmanagement, and inter-cultural
negotiations.Hiscurrent researchprojects focus
on the following topics:
• ConflictManagement andNegotiation
–examining individual differences in
effective conflictmanagement and
negotiation
• Cross-culturalManagement –Exploring
the impact of national cultureongroup
dynamicsandorganizational behaviors
• International HumanResources
Management – investigating cross-
cultural adjustment of expatriatesand
innovations strategies
Dr.Ma isrecognized forhisresearchonconflict
managementandbusinessnegotiation inan
international context. It iswell-known that some
peoplearebetternegotiators, butwhatmakes
goodnegotiatorsremainsunclear.Dr.Ma’s
research is tohelpanswer thisquestion.More
specifically, hisresearch is toexplorehow the
bestnegotiatorsbehaveand thinkdifferently
fromother individuals,what characteristics
make thebestnegotiators, andwhether these
characteristicsdiffer forpeople fromdifferent
culturalbackgrounds, includingnegotiators’
cultural intelligenceandglobalbusinessethic
intelligence.Hisresearchprovides invaluable
insights intounderstandingwhat canbedone in
order to improvenegotiationeffectiveness. The
findings fromhisresearchalsoprovide important
practicalguidelines forselectionand trainingof
Canadiannegotiatorswhich in turnenhances the
global competitivenessofCanadianbusinesses.
Dr.Mahaswonwiderecognition, bothdomestic
and international, forhisexplorativework in this
field, includingvariousawardsasevidence forhis
important contribution to thefield.
