The Association

The Retirees' Association (Faculty,Librarian, Administrator-WURA) at Windsor was formed in 1990, to give a unified voice to retirees; to provide a bridge for communication with the University; to encourage social contact among the retirees; and to open a few doors through which retirees could continue to contribute to the University of Windsor.

Thus the Association is meant to fill what could otherwise be a void in the lives of retirees possible isolation from the University and from their former colleagues; and possible lack of understanding of vital pension and health issues that affect them directly.

There are only two meetings of the full membership per year: in the spring and the fall. An informal social committee arranges several other events per year dinners, plays, picnics, and so on all of which are paid for by those who take part. The Association encourages smaller special interest groups to form as occasion and their interests warrant. Because of extreme economy of operation, dues have been kept at the level of $20 per year. This includes four issues of The Retirees' Newsletter .

Contract Proposals 2004

This year, the Faculty Association (WUFA) is getting ready to work on the Contract Proposals for the new Collective Agreement beginning 2004. In this connection , the WURA Executive has been meeting regularly over the past three months to forward its proposals to the Contract Committee of WUFA. Once it is cleared by WUFA and WURA Executive, members will be notified about the details.

The WUFA Pension and Benefits Committee also had regular meetings to review all the Sections and Articles dealing with Pension and Benefits for retirees and is planning to propose several changes to the existing language and articles. There is general consensus on the Committee to recommend that Pension matters now housed in a Letter of Understanding in Para D7 be listed in a separate article. Similarly, the Trust Fund matters will also be recommended to be incorporated in a separate article. Particular attention is being given to the accountability, frequency of meetings, language, and other issues, so that the full intent of the article is implemented.

It should be pointed out, that both members of the University Administration and Faculty Association Committees have been giving serious consideration to a number of retirees' concerns, put forward by your WURA Executive. In general, there is a sincere desire to address these concerns in the next round of contract negotiations. However, the luxury of pension surpluses as in the previous three contracts, may not be at their disposal.

Membership Dues for 2003

As our Treasurer is updating his membership list and dues paid by members, he notes that several WURA members have not sent in their membership dues for 2003. This is a gentle request on his behalf that members could express their appreciation for all the hard work that WURA is doing, by sending in dues on a regular basis.

News and Activities of Members

As your Editor, I would appreciate it if members would send information of their scholarly or community activities for publication in the Newsletter.

Retirees Spearhead United Way Campus Drive

Once again, university retirees kicked off the United Way campaign on campus with a barbecue. On hand on September 16. 2003 were , Ed Sherer, Emil Zaleski, John Masse, Peter Dufour, Otto Valvesori, Bob Chandler Jean Chandler and Datta Pillay. A big thank you for all of them, specially since retirees have kept up the tradition of starting the United Way Campus Campaign with a barbeque.
