Special Education, Core Part 2
This course is designed to develop competence in developing effective instructional programs for exceptional students. Successful candidates will gain working knowledge of information gathering and decision making strategies, an ability to interpret data from diagnoses, competence in evaluation, reporting techniques, developing and implementing teaching and intervention strategies, and skills for identifying and using support services and resources available from the school and the community.

Senior, ABQ, Mathematics

The successful completion of this Senior Basic Mathematics course will provide teachers with timely research and practical pedagogic information germane to current classrooms. The course will be structured to meet the essential needs of teachers with a mathematics background who teach within a wide range of unique classroom experiences. General issues in mathematics will be integrated into the course content to facilitate the goals of all participants, while specialized streams will also be included in the form of individual projects and presentations. The course is based on a premise that participants learn from, and assist in the teaching of, fellow participants.

This course is designed to prepare teachers of French as a Second Language for the core program. Cooperative Education, Part 1
Cooperative Education is a method of curriculum delivery which integrates in-school instruction with out-of-school work experience. The topics of this course include: counselling, interviewing and consultation stills. Parent consultation, ethical and legal implications to helping, Guidance and Cooperative Education, historical overview of Co-Op Education student placement procedures, student monitoring skills, examination of legal and ethical practices of Cooperative Education, the relationship of in-school courses to the world of work, and issues relative to equity and the needs of learning exceptional youth. Instructional methods include lectures discussion, case studies, individual and group projects, and field visits.

Honours Specialist, English

The Honours Specialist Course in English to be offered this summer in association with the Stratford Festival will have as its foundation the four Shakespearean plays of the Festival’s season. The course itself will have two components: first, an historical, theoretical and analytical introduction to Shakespeare’s plays in performance on stage and screen; and second, a series of workshops designed to expose those interested in teaching Shakespeare in the schools to classroom methods and resources which can make his plays accessible and engaging for all students.

Computers in the Classroom, Part 1

This course will introduce participants to the use of computers and related technologies in education. Emphasis will be on using tool and curriculum-specific software to support student learning. For participants with little or no computer experience, content will be presented in a non-technical manner with sufficient hands-on opportunities on computer platforms including Macintosh and DOS/Windows. Participants who already have computer operational skills will be offered activities and assignments tailored to their experience level.

This course will assist teachers in developing appropriate leadership abilities and consultation skills at the school board levels. Successful candidates will have competence in the application of current legislation, establishing and developing structures for programs, in-school teams, and IPRCs. At the board level, successful candidates will have the ability and knowledge to develop in-service delivery models, coordinate community resources and provide program evaluation, development and implementation at the school system level.

Elective: Behaviour Disorders, Advanced
This course provides a review of (1) normal emotional and social development of children and adolescents, and (2) the most common needs of those students whose behaviours are considered to be disturbing or disturbed. The course will develop basic competencies in assessing emotional and social development and behaviour. Various approaches to the explanation of specific emotional and behavioural needs and their elated educational and instructional strategies will be examined. The course will also address the occurrence of disturbing behaviour that is situation specific as well as family and other contextual factors in so far as they interact with the student’s development and behaviour.

A course designed to increase knowledge of the developmental stages of Primary Division children, and enable teachers to plan, implement and evaluate ongoing individual and group learning experiences based on this increased expertise. The course encourages the acquisition of innovative teaching strategies, while simultaneously focussing on traditional elements of classroom teaching competence such as planning, questioning, motivation, evaluation and discipline. Candidates are encouraged to adopt a reflective, critical-thinking approach to issue and theories of teaching and learning. Librarianship, Part I

This course provides participants with the ability to assist students and teachers in locating and utilizing research materials, preparing bibliographies, and organizing and conducting research as well as knowledge of print and non-print resource materials. Librarianship, Part I will lend an understanding of common audio-visual equipment and non-print resources, while providing the ability to instruct others in their use. Also, a basic interpretation of efficient systems for cataloguing print and non-print resources, and organizing and conducting resource centre routines is presented. Finally the ability to select suitable reference and resource materials to support a specific topic with emphasis on the selection of Canadian materials where appropriate is emphasized through this course..
