In-Service Program
Admission Requirements
Please Note: For
teachers employed by a board of education, a supervisory officer may be a superintendent
or assistant superintendent of the board. A principal is not deemed to be a supervisory
officer.
For teachers employed by a private school, the official appointed by the Ministry of
Education and Training to provide supervisory services for the school will be deemed to be
the supervisory officer.
Also note that the University of Windsor does not keep student transcript
information on file. Applicants will be required to submit a copy of all supporting
documentation each time they apply for a course. |
ADDITIONAL BASIC QUALIFICATIONS COURSES
All applicants must hold a valid Certificate of Qualification or Interim Certificate of
Qualification from the Ontario College of Teachers and provide proof by submitting a
photocopy of their most recent Certificate of Qualification or Interim Certificate of
Qualification.
In addition:
Applicants for a Primary ABQ must:
- hold qualifications in one of the Junior Division, the Intermediate Division or the
Senior Division.
Applicants for a Junior ABQ must:
- hold qualifications in one of the Primary Division, the Intermediate Division or the
Senior Division.
Applicants for a Intermediate ABQ must:
- hold qualifications in one of the Primary Division, the Junior Division or the Senior
Division;
- have 6 semester courses at the undergraduate level in a teachable subject for the
intermediate level. This must be substantiated by submission of a copy of their
undergraduate transcript(s). Applicants who have taken university courses at institutions
other than the University of Windsor must provide actual course descriptions from the
institution before equivalencies can be considered. Where there is doubt, an individual
from the appropriate Faculty at the University of Windsor will be consulted.
Applicants for a Senior ABQ must:
- hold qualifications in one of the Primary Division, the Junior Division or the
Intermediate Division;
- have 10 semester courses at the undergraduate level in a teachable subject for the
senior level for their major area and 6 semester credits at the
undergraduate level in a teachable subject for the senior level for their minor area. This
must be substantiated by submission of a copy of their undergraduate transcript(s).
Applicants who have taken university courses at institutions other than the University of
Windsor must provide actual course descriptions from the institution before equivalencies
can be considered. Where there is doubt, an individual from the appropriate Faculty at the
University of Windsor will be consulted.
Note: Courses which
have already been counted towards certification for a level other than the one to which
the applicant is applying may not be counted towards another level. In the case of senior
basic courses, undergraduate courses which have counted towards a major may not also be
counted towards a minor and vice versa. |
THREE PART ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS COURSES
Part 1:
Applicants must:
- hold a valid Certificate of Qualification or Interim Certificate of Qualification from
the Ontario College of Teachers and provide proof by submitting a photocopy of their most
recent Certificate of Qualification or Interim Certificate of Qualification;
- hold qualifications in one of the Primary Division, Junior Division, the Intermediate
Division or the Senior Division.
Part 2:
Applicants must:
- hold a valid Certificate of Qualification or Interim Certificate of Qualification from
the Ontario College of Teachers and provide proof by submitting a photocopy of their most
recent Certificate of Qualification or Interim Certificate of Qualification;
- have successfully completed Part 1 and provide proof by submitting a photocopy of their
most recent Certificate of Qualification,
- provide proof of at least 1 full year of successful teaching experience as certified by
the appropriate supervisory officer. This experience must have been completed subsequent
to the applicant's Ontario teaching certification. One year means approximately 200 days
of teaching. In the area of French As A Second Language, students applying to FSL, Part 2
may be required to take a proficiency test at the discretion of the instructor.
Part 3:
Applicants must:
- hold a valid Certificate of Qualification or Interim Certificate of Qualification from
the Ontario College of Teachers and provide proof by submitting a photocopy of their most
recent Certificate of Qualification or Interim Certificate of Qualification;
- have successfully completed Part 2 and provide proof by submitting a photocopy of their
most recent Certificate of Qualification;
- provide proof of at least 2 full years of successful teaching experience, including one
year in Ontario schools, one year of which includes experience in the subject, as
certified by the appropriate supervisory officer. This experience must have been completed
subsequent to the applicant's Ontario teaching certification. One year means approximately
200 days of teaching. There must be evidence of long-term, sustained instruction in the
subject area in question. This instruction must include planning, teaching and evaluating
specifically in this area on a regular basis. Incidental and/or irregular instruction may
not be included. The activity must demonstrate implementation of skills and knowledge
gained in parts 1 and 2 AQ courses. Acceptance into the course may be subject to the
submission of a detailed outline showing how these factors had been reflected in the
applicant's teaching practices.
Note: In the area of Special
Education, the teacher may instruct exceptional pupils in an integrated and/or
segregated classroom setting. There must be evidence of individualized programming and
instruction to the exceptional pupils. A teacher with exceptional pupils in his/her
regular classroom would not automatically qualify unless there were evidence of the
measures noted above and that the program was modified to some extent for the exceptional
pupils integrated into this class. Applicants would be required to submit a detailed
outline showing how these factors had been reflected in his/her teaching practice.
Applicants to the Special Education program should note that courses fall into
one of two categories: core or elective. In order to complete one of the three parts
(Special Education - Part 1, 2 and Specialist), students must complete one core and one
elective course. The courses may be taken in any order with the following provisos: you
may not take Part 2 Core before completing Part 1 or Specialist before completing Part 2;
the basic level of an elective must be taken before the advanced level may be taken.
Credit for each Part will not be given until both the core and elective courses for that
Part have been taken.
In the area of French As A Second Language , applicants for Part 1 who did not
attend the Faculty of Education, University of Windsor French Methodology course in their
Pre-Service program are required to take a French proficiency test before they will be
admitted to the course. Students applying to FSL, Parts 2 and 3 may also be required to
take the test at the discretion of the instructor. At the time of application, each
prospective student must submit a cheque in the amount of $25.00, made payable to the
University of Windsor to cover testing expenses. This fee is nonrefundable.
Credits for Individual and Society may come from Anthropology, Sociology or
Psychology. |
HONOURS SPECIALIST COURSES
Applicants must:
- hold or be deemed to hold an Certificate of Qualification or Interim Certificate of
Qualification from the Ontario College of Teachers and provide proof by submitting a
photocopy of their most recent Certificate of Qualification or Interim Certificate of
Qualification;
- hold qualifications in the Primary Division, the Junior Division, the Intermediate
Division in general studies or the Senior Division in general studies;
- provide a copy of official transcripts of all university work to show that the applicant
holds a degree of Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science from an Ontario university (or
qualifications the Ontario College of Teachers considers to be equivalent) in a program:
a) that requires four years of university study or the equivalent to a
total of at least 20 full university courses (60 university credits). Courses required for
teaching certification or additional teaching qualifications may not be used for this
requirement;
b) in which the candidate has obtained at least second class (B) or
equivalent standing in at least nine full university courses in the subject in which the
candidate seeks an Honours Specialist qualification; or
c) in the case where a candidate seeks one Honours Specialist
qualification in two subject areas combined, the candidate has obtained at least second
class (B) or equivalent standing in at least 14 full university courses (42 university
credits) in the two subject areas and not fewer than 6 full university courses in each
subject.
- submit evidence of at least 2 years of successful teaching experience, including one
year or experience in Ontario, subsequent to teacher certification as certified by the
appropriate supervisory officer, at least one year of which is in the Honour Specialist
qualification sought.
In the case where a candidate
seeks one Honours Specialist qualification in two subject areas combined, recommendations
will go to the Ontario College of Teachers only when both subject areas of the Honours
Specialist course have been successfully completed. |
Note:
- to be qualified in General Science, you must have a least 1 undergraduate course in each
of the following areas: Environmental Science, Biology, Physics and Chemistry.
- you may take the Honours Specialist Science without having an ABQ in Science
- credits for Individual and Society may come from Anthropology, Sociology or Psychology
- Kinesiology subjects do not count as equivalent to Science courses (U. of Windsor
policy)
- Engineering university courses with a substantial Science component may be counted as
equivalent to Science courses. The following University of Windsor courses meet the
Science criteria:
- Mechanics (Physics)
- Engineering Materials (1st year = Chemistry, 2nd year plus = Physics)
- Hydrology (Physics)
- Earth Science (Physics) Geology (Physics)
- Design courses do not count as Science equivalents
- if there is uncertainty regarding the degree of subject content in a course, the
applicant will be required to provide course descriptions to the Coordinator of the
In-Service Program
- applicants who have taken university courses at institutions other than the University
of Windsor must provide actual course descriptions from the institution before
equivalencies can be considered. Where there is doubt, an individual from the appropriate
Faculty at the University of Windsor will be consulted.
HONOURS B. ED. PROGRAM
Applicants for admission to a program of studies leading to the degree of Bachelor of
Education (Honours) are expected to satisfy the following requirements:
1) an approved degree of the University of Windsor or other accredited university; and
2) a Certificate of Qualification from the Ontario College of Teachers; or
3) permission of the Dean of the Faculty of Education, for which written applications
will be individually considered.
Documents Required
1) an official transcript of all undergraduate and graduate work from universities
attended ("official" means that the transcripts are sent directly from the
institution to the Faculty of Education at the University of Windsor);
2) a copy of their Certificate of Registration from the Ontario College of Teachers;
3) a copy of their up-to-date Certificate of Qualifications from the Ontario College of
Teachers;
4) a statement of Personal Objectives outlining their proposed plan-of-work.
Inquiries about admission criteria, courses, and accreditation should be directed to
the Coordinator of the In-Service Program.
**PLEASE NOTE
All In-Service courses leading to the Honours B.Ed. must have been taken at the
University of Windsor after the inception of the program.
