Subset |
Morphology | Thermomonospora |
CELLULAR |
Staining | Gram-positive |
Morphology | Produce single, heat sensitive, nonmotile aleurisopores on aerial hyphae. On agar media, a branched, nonfragmenting vegetative mycelium forms leathery colonies usually covered with aerial mycelium. Spores may be sessile but are more often formed at the tips of simple unbranched or branched sporophores; in many strains repeated sporophore branching leads to the formation of spore clusters. Spores may also be produced on the substrate hyphae.. |
Motility | |
Specialized structures | Spores are killed by treatment at 90`C for 30 min in aqueous suspension |

Growth Parameters | Thermomonospora |
PHYSIOLOGICAL |
Tropism | Chemoorganotrophic |
Oxygen | Aerobic. |
pH | pH 7.0-9.0. Aerial mycelium production and sporulation often optimal at pH >8.0 |
Temperature | 40-48`C |
Requirements | Amino acid and vitamin supplements, eg. yeast extract, required for good growth |
Products | Esculin, xylan, casein, gelatin, and carboxymethylcellulose are degraded |
Enzymes | Catalase, deaminase, B-glucosidase, and B- galactosidase are produced |
Unique features | The cell wall contains meso-diaminopimelic acid (meso-DAP) but no other diagnostic amino acids or sugars... and all strains are sensitive to novobiocin (50 ug/ml). |
ENVIRONMENTAL |
Habitat | Can be isolated from soil but are more common in manures, composts, and overheated fodders. |
