ALAN WILDEMAN
President and Vice-Chancellor
From September 2013 until April 2014, the University of Windsor will commemorate five
decades of education, creativity, and innovation with an alumni family that is now more than
110,000 strong. Together with our students, faculty, staff and the regional community, you
are invited to celebrate a University that for 50 years, has consistently focused on bringing
people together – their efforts, their hopes for the future and their contributions to making
this a better world.
Mark your calendar for September 19-22, 2013 when the celebrations begin with a special
50th Anniversary Weekend. Approximately 20,000 participants are expected to visit the
campus for a weekend designed to strengthen Lancer pride and show our appreciation for the
continued support of our region. It will be a memorable weekend highlighted by class reunions,
a headline concert event, a car show, a tailgate party with a retro-styled football game, and a
fun run for all ages – just to name a few of the events the anniversary committee is working on.
We are very proud to have the University of Windsor Alumni Association as our presenting
sponsor for the weekend, together with the support of Green Shield Canada, TourismWindsor
Essex Pelee Island and Caesars Windsor among many other prominent businesses.
This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get involved in an alumni and community
event that will put the national spotlight on Windsor as we reflect on our rich heritage and
look forward to the next 50 years. More information can be found at
anniversary
, and participant registration will be available this June.
This fall, we will welcome the first class of the next half-century who will experience a
revitalized campus that is being transformed to meet the aspirations of students, faculty and
staff, and the needs of our community. This spring will mark the official grand opening of
the Ed Lumley Centre for Engineering Innovation, and the beginning of the construction and
renovation of our downtown campus.
The success of our first 50 years and the transformation now underway for our future have
been enriched by our community, our donors and friends, countless volunteers and support
from all levels of government. It is the efforts of all of you that are enabling our University to
do things that are making a difference in our world.
For example, in this issue of
VIEW
, we examine how a new Masters program meets the
growing need for oncology nurses who provide highly specialized care for patients. You’ll
also travel to the frigid waters along the north shore of Baffin Island where research on fish
migration is assisting commercial fisheries in Inuit communities. In this issue we also welcome
the new President of the Alumni Association, Mr. Mike Bates. We look forward to welcoming
you back to campus this fall and sharing in a celebration that recognizes how our dynamic
heritage has helped pave the way for a very vibrant future for the University of Windsor.
