Do you remember rushing across “the Quad” to your
class on a cool, crisp fall morning
or looking longingly
outside a Dillon Hall class window on that first warm day
of spring?
How about studying until the wee hours in the quiet
corridors of the Leddy Library? Did you cheer on the
championship Lancer basketball squad of the 1960s—or
our more recent Canadian hoops champs? Did you meet
your best friend or future spouse here?
UWindsor would like you to share those memories as it
celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.
“We are planning a
multitude of exciting reunion
and community events to
help celebrate this wonderful
milestone. Of course, not all
of our 110,000+ alumni will
be able to return to campus to
celebrate, so we are inviting
you to participate in a virtual
reunion online,” says Holly
Ward, the University’s chief
communications officer.
“We would like you to share
your amazing memories—
especially photos— by visiting
our 50th anniversary website
,”
Ward says.
In addition, the University is looking for momentos that
can be included in a 50th Anniversary Weekend display in
the Leddy Library on the September anniversary weekend.
If you have a team jersey, textbooks from 1963, 1980s pub
night posters, or any UWindsor memorabilia that you’d
like to suggest for our display, please take a photo of it and
send it to:
.
If the items are not used for the display, photos can
still be uploaded to the anniversary website which is being
launched in early March.
“We want the anniversary website to be a place where
our alumni can virtually meet and reminisce about their
time at UWindsor—whether they graduated in 1963 or
2012,” says Ward.
The site is also where people can register in June for
50th Anniversary Weekend events which will take place
September 19-22. The weekend includes dozens of events
such as a campus birthday party, Campus Showcase and
tours, a Classic Car Show, the Future Lancers Activity
Zone, a Lancer football game and tailgating party, alumni
reunions, University Players production, a Fun Run and
wrap-up breakfast. A highlight
will be a special concert to be
held at Caesars Windsor.
Ward encourages visitors to
the website to check back often
for updated information.
The University of Windsor
Alumni Association is the
presenting sponsor for the
weekend with a generous
contribution of more than
$160,000 for several key
events. In addition, Tourism
Windsor-Essex-Pelee Island,
Caesars Windsor and Green
Shield Canada are also
providing major sponsorship
support. Sponsorship opportunities with generous
recognition packages are still available. Visit the website
for more info.
Ward expects that the weekend celebration will
ultimately attract up to 20,000 to visit Windsor, strengthen
Lancer pride and allow the campus “to show our
appreciation for the continued support of the region.”
