SALUTING STUDENT SPIRIT
The Alumni Association proudly sponsors a number of annual awards
that recognize the contributions of exceptional students. Below are the
most recent recipients.
T
he Alumni Volunteer Spirit Awards are presented to students in both SOS
(Students Orienting Students) and VISA (Volunteer International Student
Association) programs. Recipients are selected based on their demonstration
of leadership abilities, academic standing and service as strong role models for
other volunteers.
The 2013 recipient of the
Alumni
SOS Volunteer Spirit Award
is
Salwa
Chevelwalla BSc ’13
, described by
her peers as an exemplary student and
volunteer, always willing to help above
and beyond the call of duty. An SOS
member since 2010, Chevelwalla has
banked more than 536 volunteer hours
in support of its programs.
Win Shi Wong,
this year’s winner
of the
Alumni VISA Spirit Award,
is a
third-year communication, media, film
and visual art student. She has a reputation as dependable and committed, dedicated to
making a difference in student lives. She will serve as the VISA student co-ordinator for
2013/14 and is considered encouraging and an inspiration to everyone on her team.
The
Alumni Super Sophomore Awards
are presented annually to outstanding,
second-year male and female student-athletes.This year’s winners are
Spencer Pommells
and
Alyshia Phillips,
pictured below with Alumni Association President Mike Bates.
Pommells
(Lancer Men’s
Hockey) had a breakout
season. He led the country
in scoring for the first half
of the season, ultimately
finishing sixth with 38 points,
including nine goals. His 29
assists ranked him fourth in
the country. In the playoffs,
he scored four goals and seven
points in six games to help the Lancers reach the Western Conference Finals for the
second straight year.
Phillips
(Lancer Women’s Soccer) is a second-year forward.This season, she
played a key role on the Lancer offence, keeping pressure on the opponents’ defense.
Demonstrating a tremendous work ethic on and off the field, she started 11 games and
scored two game-winning goals.
The Association’s
Dramatic Art Alumni
Scholarship,
presented annually to a third- or
fourth-year student, recognizes outstanding
potential in the performing arts or in the
technical/production or design areas.This year,
judges selected
Joshua Quinlan,
at left, as an
exemplary recipient of this award.
