PUPATELLO NAMED 50TH ANNIVERSARY RECIPIENT OF
ALUMNI’S HIGHEST HONOUR

andra Pupatello BA ’86, LLD ’12, a
longtime advocate for the University of
Windsor, will receive the
Alumni Award of
Merit
at the Alumni Association’s Annual
General Meeting and Awards Presentations
this November 21st.
Named CEO of the WindsorEssex
Development Corporation in May,
Pupatello continues to serve as director,
Business Development and Global Markets
for PricewaterhouseCoopers Canada. She
was MPP,Windsor West from 1995-2011
and Minister of Community & Social
Services from 2003-05. During this time
she created the Jobs Now program to help
welfare recipients enter the workforce, and
the Passport Program to support people with
developmental disabilities. She was Minister
of Education in 2005 and implemented a
small class-size policy, the first of its kind in
North America.
Pupatello was Minister of Economic
Development & Trade from 2006-11 and
among other contributions, created the
Open For Business Secretariat to review,
improve and standardize government
services to best support economic
development. She introduced Ontario’s
class-leading electric vehicle initiatives and
programs; established the Ontario-Quebec
Trade and Economic Agreement to increase
investment and trade between the provinces;
signed trade and investment co-operation
agreements in such global markets as China,
Mexico and the European Union; initiated
and hosted the province’s first-ever global
industrial Aerospace show in 2010; and
established a rare agreement to further
collaboration and investment and operations
in Ontario with General Electric, Siemens
and Cisco.
Among other honours, Pupatello has
received the CAMM and CTMA Awards;
the Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters
Advocacy and Leadership Award; The
Athena Award for Inspiring Women in
Business Leadership; Windsor Woman of
the Year; Honorary Rotary Club of Windsor
Member, and Paul Harris Fellow; University
of Windsor’s Charles Clark Award for
University and Community Service; and
Italian of the Year for Windsor-Essex
County.
In May 2012, Pupatello chaired a roast
of University Chancellor Ed Lumley that
helped to raise $5.3 million for the Ed
Lumley Centre for Engineering Innovation.

his fall, former Lancer athletes Andy
Auch, Valérie Hamel, Gerald Hlady
and Ed Petryshyn will be inducted in the
Alumni Sports Hall of Fame.
Andy Auch
BSc ’69, BEd ’74,
MEd ’77
was
a leader on the
basketball court.
His teams won
two OQAA
Championships
(1966-67, 1968-69) and two national titles
(1966-67, 1968-69). He was a first
team OQAA all-star in 1969 and won
the DeMarco Award as the top male
student-athlete.
Valérie Hamel
BA ’04
was the
first true women’s
hockey superstar
at UWindsor. She
was a three-time
OUA all-star and
captured the Banner Shield twice as the
University of Windsor’s Female Athlete of
the Year. She is a three-time CIS Academic
All-Canadian and won the prestigious
DeMarco Award in 2001-02 as the top
female student-athlete.

Lancer football
team,
Gerald
Hlady BHK ’91,
BEd ’92
was an
all-star athlete and
student. He was a
three-time OUAA all-star, CIAU Academic
All-Canadian, and DeMarco Award
recipient. Hlady was a national finalist for
the Russ Jackson Award that recognizes
outstanding achievement in athletics,
academics and community service. Following
graduation, the Ottawa Roughriders drafted
him in the fourth round of the CFL draft.
Ed Petryshyn
BA ’64
played
for two CIAU
championship
basketball teams
(1962-63, 1963-
64). He led the
team in rebounding in 1963-64. Petryshyn
went on to play baseball with the Baltimore
Orioles minor league club.
The induction ceremonies will include
the presentation of the Sport Achievement
Awards to Jack Schroeder BA ’65, BPE ’68,
MEd ’91, and Phil Haddad BA ’66.The
Team Achievement Award will recognize
the 1967-68 and 1969-70 women’s
basketball teams and the 1967-68 and 1968-
69 women’s swimming teams.
The Alumni Sports Hall of Fame Induction
Ceremony & Awards Presentations will take
place on October 6, at 1 pm, in the Ambassador
Auditorium in the CAW Student Centre.
