ampus life is measured in more than seasons or semesters. It’s
lectures given, exams passed, research breakthroughs, goals
scored, weekend get-togethers, friends made and dreams fulfilled.
Author and photographer Richard Bain set out 18 months ago
to capture just that. The result is
University of Windsor,
a 120-page
hardcover celebration of a year in the University’s life.
The book conveys the many dimensions of the University, from
a student’s first steps on campus to crossing the convocation stage,
academic, research and athletic achievements, to its integral role in
the community.
“Through Richard’s lens, this book not only captures the past 18
months of campus life, it is a reminder of the unique characteristics
and characters that bring this campus to life,” says Holly Ward,
the University’s chief communications officer. “It is a yearbook for
our very recent past, but I believe it is also a yearbook for all of our
alumni, and for all of our Lancers who have a shared history here.”
The University of Windsor Alumni Association has sponsored
the entire cost of producing the book, enabling all proceeds from its
sales to benefit 50th Anniversary Student Scholarships. The goal is
to raise more than $100,000.
“My experience at the University of Windsor was nothing short
of incredible,” writes Bain in the book’s acknowledgements. “The
students, staff and faculty all share something in common—they
truly care about learning and about each other.
“Perhaps it is the fact that this university, although it continues
to grow, has retained a sense of community, a sense of intimacy.”
In addition to outstanding photography, the book features
stories and anecdotes by internationally recognized author and
UWindsor faculty member Alistair MacLeod; UWindsor instructor,
photographer, journalist and Windsor’s first poet laureate, Marty
Gervais; and UWindsor history expert, writer, and retired faculty
member George McMahon, as well as others who have shared
their unique perspective on the University’s connection with its
community.
“As we celebrate 50 years as the University of Windsor, this
book is dedicated to the contributions of the First Nations peoples,
the Jesuits, the Basilians and founding father, the Reverend E.C.
LeBel C.S.B., who all had a hand in creating the path leading to
where we are today,” says UWindsor President Alan Wildeman.
“The book depicts the story of who we are and where we are
going as a campus community and provides an exciting perspective
on our place in the history of our community.”
