1980s/90s
Enrolment growth continued through the 1980s and
early 1990s, particularly under the leadership of
President Ron Ianni. Among the new buildings erected
were the Odette Business Building and the CAW
Student Centre.

2003
Enrolment reached record heights of more than 16,000 full- and part-time students in the fall of 2003 with
the elimination of OAC year. In response, the University invested more than $50 million in the new Alumni
Hall student residence, the Anthony P. Toldo Health Education Centre, the Jackman Dramatic Art Centre, and
classroom and lab upgrades.
June 2011
In June 2011, the University
celebrated its 100,000 graduate at
the Spring Convocation ceremony.
2008
Among the first official duties of current
President Alan Wildeman, who took office
in July 2008, was the formal opening of
the Medical Education Building.
May 2011
In May 2011, the University announced its plans to expand the
campus into Windsor’s downtown core as the new home for the
School for Arts and Creative Innovation, the School of Social Work
and the Centre for Executive and Professional Education.

ED LUMLEY

T
he Honourable Ed Lumley,
namesake of the Ed Lumley
Centre for Engineering Innovation,
was first appointed as University of
Windsor chancellor in 2006, and was
named to a third term in 2012.
Born and raised in Windsor, he
graduated in 1961 from Assumption
University, predecessor of the
University of Windsor. A successful
entrepreneur, he had a distinguished
record of achievement as Mayor
of Cornwall, Ont., and 10 years as a Member of Parliament.
As a Minister of the Crown, his portfolios included Industry,
International Trade, and Science & Technology. During that time,
he also held responsibility for such Crown Corporations as the
CBC, the Canada Development Investment Corp. and the Export
Development Corporation.
Lumley, Vice Chair of BMO Nesbitt Burns for more than
25 years, served on the board of directors of many domestic and
international companies including Air Canada, Bell Canada
Enterprises, Canadian National Railway, and Magna International.
His colleagues in the all-party Canadian Association of Former
Parliamentarians selected Lumley to be the second recipient of their
Lifetime Achievement Award.

ichael Bell BA ’66, MA ’67
is the Paul Martin Senior
Scholar in International Diplomacy
in the Political Science Program at
the University of Windsor.
He is part of the Jerusalem Old
City Initiative team, working with
Israeli, Palestinian, American and
British civil society partners to
explore policy options and advocacy
relating to Old City governance,
which could be utilized in the
negotiation of a peace treaty between the Israelis and Palestinians.
Bell’s outstanding diplomatic career included stints as
Canadian Ambassador to Israel, Jordan and Egypt. He was
named Fellow at the Weatherhead Centre for International
Affairs at Harvard University and served as the Senior Scholar
on diplomacy at the University of Toronto’s Munk Centre for
International Studies.
The alumnus is also a 2004 the recipient of the University of
Windsor’s Alumni Association Alumni Award of Merit.
