Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment, Volume 14, Number 6 - 1997

The South Oaks Gambling Screen was used to asses the levels of problem gambling in 328 clients at three substance abuse treatment facilities in the City of Windsor, Ontario. Two of the treatment facilities were residential and the third was a day treatment program.

It was found that 14.3% of the sample were probable pathological gamblers and an additional 11% were problem gamblers. These rates are approximately 10 times the rates found in the City of Windsor. These findings and others similar studies, suggest that substance abuse treatment providers should regularly screen for the presence of gambling problems. Pathological gambling has been associated with elevated rates of depression and suicide. It is thus imperative that gambling problems be identified and their treatment be incorporated into the overall treatment program.
