THE LETTER BOX

To the Editor, The Newsletter:

I read in the last Newsletter that the Retirees Association was founded in 1990. But I remember that in the early 80s a few of us (in those days there were only a few retirees) got together at the Windsor Hall and started the Retirees' Association with myself as the first President. When I left Windsor, Norm took over.

Past events are still events even if some people ignore them. Kindest regards,

Val Cervin,

Toronto.

VISIT TO "SECOND CITY" PLANNED FOR DEC 4TH

An outing is planned to the acclaimed cabaret-style comedy centre, Second City, in Detroit, Sunday, Dec 4th. This was announced at the Oct. meet. John LaGaipa states that tickets have been ordered for those who sent in their money ($12 US). For others who wish to go, John advises:

"Others may join the outing. Order your own tickets by phone (313-965-2222). First phone me at 966-2350 in case I have a cancellation.

"We will meet at 5 p.m.for car pooling at the Yorktown Square (Grand Marais W. and Dominion):

Then we go to Stewart's Restaurant on Woodward for dinner at 6. Let me know a week in advance if you wish to go to Stewart's and to get directions if you need them. We have a private room (the Lure Room) at Stewart's. Following dinner, it's on to Second City for the show at 8 p.m.

"The estimated total cost (dinner and show) is about $35 Cdn per person". About Second City, John adds, "Many famous comedians got their start with this nation-wide organization."

Afterward, all are invited to the LaGaipas' home, at 2464 Longfellow for refreshments.

EDITORIAL

The Association's Election

It is clear the Executive took on a real piece of work when it recommended that this election be done entirely by mail. But the decision was nevertheless a good one.

The two present officers of the Association were founding members of it (at least of the 1990 version!) and they guided it through its formative years, being almost routinely re-elected each year. Their decision not to stand this year opens the field, so to speak, for the first time.

The Executive took that into account in favouring a mail election this time; and also that a large number of our members simply live too far away to get to meetings, and they deserve a say. If it all proves to be an enormous snafu, well, we will have learned something by the experience!

One other election note. At stake in this election are not prestige posts or power positions, because such don't exist in retirees' associations. The jobs are not exciting; they pay no money, and there are no perks. But they can be rewarding provided you have what is required: a conviction that the things this Retirees' Association is trying to do for its members are worth-while; and a willingness to give up a lot of free time to help do them.

PRE-VALENTINE DINNER SLATED FOR JANUARY 21ST

From the Entertainment Committee: Jan 21st is a fairly firm date. Ruth and Dave Booth generously have made their home available for this event. This will be a catered informal dinner (some on TV trays) with no mark-up on liquor prices. It will be cheaper and interactions will be greater. For more info call John LaGaipa at 966-2350, or Dave Booth at 966-2547.
