In Memoriam

With deep sadness we record the deaths of two former members of University of Windsor in November/December 1998 and February 1999

ERIC WYLLIS CHANNEN

Aged 69, died suddenly on November 24, 1998 in Ottawa. Dr. Channen started his career as a professor in the Department of Chemistry in 1960. He left the University briefly for a position in Texas and but returned to Windsor in the late 60's as the Founding Director, School of Computer Science. After serving many years as Director, he continued as a professor until his retirement in 1995. He was a dedicated teacher and counsellor to students. He is survived by his wife Helen(nee Shemilt) and five children(Susan, Peter, Monica, Gillian and Jennifer) and a sister Ruth and brothers Paul and Michael and nine grand children.

DERRICK SHANNON TRACY

passed away suddenly on December 27, 1998 at the New Delhi airport, in India. He joined the Department of Mathematics in 1965 and founded the Statistics program there. He retired on August 31, 1998 after 33 years at the University He was Professor-Emeritus and a keen researcher, published many scholarly articles and also supervised 12 doctoral dissertations, numerous master's theses, and several post doctoral fellows. Dr. Tracy is survived by his wife Sheila, a brother Eric, in India, a sister Stella in Toronto and two nephews and nieces. Funeral services were held in India on December 28, 1998 . A Memorial Service is being planned in the near future.

THOMAS WILLIAM MCDONALD

aged 69 passed away suddenly at home on February 9, 1999. Dr. McDonald retired as a Professor of Mechanical Engineering after many years service at the University of Windsor, including a period as Head of the Department. He is survived by his beloved wife Anne and children David, Paul, Nancy, Elena, Micayla and Maurizio and brother Charles McDonald and many nieces and nephews. He was Elder of Roseland United Church, member of ASHRAE, the Windsor Canoe Club, the Central Seniors Band, the Silver Bells, the Young at Heart Band and APEO.

Effective the Current Issue of the Newsletter the Editor has decided that Death notification of Members' Spouses will also be reported for the benefit of those friends and colleagues who are unable to access such information from newspapers or other sources.

BARBARA BENEDICT

passed away on July 24, 1998 at Hotel-Dieu Grace Hospital. Beloved wife Winfred Gerald Benedict and mother of four daughters, Ruth, Joan, Anne and Grace and their families, Also survived by six grandchildren. Barbara was a Life Deacon of Temple Baptist Church and a retired teacher of the Windsor Board of Education.

MARGARET BILLINGHURST (Peggy) Isabelle (Acheson)

passed away on February 4, 1999 at Hotel-Dieu Grace Hospital. Beloved wife of Robert Billinghurst, mother of Craig (Dr.),Kent, Clark (Dr.), Kirk and Carol. Proud grandmother of 14 grandchildren. Canadian Cancer Society volunteer and life member of Ellen Douglas, Knox Presbyterian Church.


Pension Monitoring Committee

Members of the Committee are: Stan Cunningham, Pat Galasso Edwin Habib, Joseph Habowsky. Gerry Monforton, Bill Philips, Ed Rosenbaum, and Norm Shklov.

Membership is still open to anyone who wishes to serve on this committee. Please call the Secretary 519-972-1247. Your role on this committee could be very valuable to the Retirees' Association.

President Cunningham has tentatively set up a meeting of this committee on March 4, 1999.


The Newsletter

The Retirees' Newsletter is put out by the Faculty, Librarian Administrator Retirees' Association of the University of Windsor, five times per year: -- in February, April, June, October and December.

Its main purpose is to inform our retirees on matters of direct interest to them - such as their pensions, benefits, association activities, etc. and, equally, to provide a channel for retirees to keep in touch with each other and with outside groups, including the Faculty Association and the University.

The Newsletter welcomes from readers their comments, arguments, contributions and creative work.

Membership Dues for 1998-1999

Please send in your membership dues to our Treasurer Professor Phyllis Nolan. Cheques may be sent to her, Care of the Retirees' Association, University of Windsor, Windsor, Ontario N9B 3P4

The membership list on pages 9 and 10 of this Newsletter includes the names of members, who have been regularly sending their dues, but this year, the Treasurer has not received their dues to date.
