a blend of the old and the new, and the final syntheses of the 'past , the present and the future'. I am still as happy, bubbly, and enthusiastic as before, but with less energy that I need. Caught in the whirlwind of the forces like the Canadian dollar is one has to learn to manage with less. Happiness is a state of mind, not the job, the position, prestige or the wealth; laugh at them and laugh at yourself. So! here I am.

Member's Activities

Peter Sonnenfeld published yet another paper "Sonnenfeld, P., 1997 - The Environment of Miocene salt basins in Cis- and Transcarpathia . Slovak Geological Magazine, Vol 3, No.2, P.83-90

He recently addressed the Colloquim in honour of the 85th birthday of Dr. Robert Kuehn, honorary professor of the University of Heidelberg, the godfather of modern potash research. Dr. Kuehn helped in identifying a new mineral, sergipite [CaCl2 4H2O], discovered by Dr. P. Sonnenfeld.

According to Peter any rumour about the mental powers declining with age is grossly exaggerated, once viral diseases were licked.

While in Edmonton last June, Jean and Peter saw the Romanows' who live right across the street from the University of Alberta and frequently use their life membership of the Faculty Club.

Pension Monitoring Committee

At the Fall General Meeting on October 16, 1998, the membership approved the establishment of a Pension Monitoring Committee. President Kumar has appointed the following to that committee:

Edwin Habib, Stan Cunningham, Pat Galasso Joseph Habowsky. Gerry Monforton, Bill Philips,

Ed Rosenbaum, and Norm Shklov. Membership is still open to anyone who wishes to serve on this committee. Please call the Secretary 519-972-1247. Your role on this committee could be very valuable to the Retirees' Association.

Where do the Retirees' Stand?

(Continued from page 2)

The Retirees' Association submitted its report on Pension and Benefits to the Faculty Association Contract Committee. But it is up to this committee how it deals with it.

We do not have any official representation on this Committee.

It is about time that we assert our role and seek representation on the Faculty Association Executive Committee, The Contract Committee and the Board of Governors Pension Committee.

The present membership of retirees is around 230 and in another 2 or 3 years, the numbers might reach 300, compared to the 450 full-time faculty members. Currently, the Faculty Association represents our interests. But we should have a voice on the above Committees that deal with matters of significant interest to us.

Therefore, this request is to urge all members to attend the March 12 Spring General Meeting and give us a strong mandate to seek such representation, as this item is on the Agenda.

Letters to the Editor:

I wish to express my disappointment that a letter such as Cormac Smith's was included in the last Newsletter by Bill Phillips, without my knowledge to allow for a response, in light of the fact that this was his last effort as Editor.

I choose not to respond to Cormac's letter and am happy to let my record of contributions to improvements to the lot of retirees stand on its merit. I would also recommend that such letters not appear in future editions of the Newsletter using valuable space which may be devoted to constructive issues.

Signed Pat Galasso

Editor's Note:

The policy of this Editor is to encourage letters to the Editor, expressing divergent views, so long as both points of view are presented to the membership. In the above situation, I regret only the fifty members who attended the Fall General Meeting perhaps had a chance to read Pat Galasso's letter written to the Board of Governors, while others who received the Newsletter by mail were disadvantaged. Every effort will be made in the future to present both views subject to availability of space. Datta Pillay
