The Retirees's Association ( Faculty, Librarian, Administrator), University of Windsor, Windsor, Ont. Canada

Vol VIII, No. 1, February 1998

EDITORIAL PAGE

As your new Editor, I am honoured to serve in this capacity and bear the "Torch" passed on by Bill Phillips whose tireless efforts as Editor made the Retirees Newsletter a professional publication. It is certainly my intention to remain enthusiastic and engage your attention, interest and with your help and cooperation, make our newsletter a publication that you look forward to receiving in the mail.

Retirees' Concerns: In these editorial columns many matters affecting the retirees' - pension, benefits , services and facilities at the University of Windsor have been reviewed, discussed and/or criticised. At the risk of being repetitious, I expect to continue to harp on them, from time to time, as we still have a long way to go before any significant improvements are made in meeting our expectations. Therefore, please bear with me and if possible, provide me with the necessary facts and ammunition, so that we can deal withthem.

Contributions/Articles/Travel News etc. etc.

In the past, many of you have taken the time to send in contributions, bits and pieces for publication in the Newsletter. I sincerely thank you all( space does not allow me to list all your names , even though I am tempted) for your efforts. This Newsletter is only as good as its contributing membership, to keep alive and make it interesting reading. All of you can expect to hear from me , in an effort to persuade you, to share your news, views and any other adventures and experiences, that may be of interest to our members.

Membership Drive and $ 10 Dues: Any organization survives or fails on the strength and support of its membership and collective voice. This plea is on behalf of our Treasurer to gently remind those who have not paid the dues for 1997-98. Please send in your cheques. The small membership dues has been put to good use by the Retirees Executive Committee, particularly in publishing 5 issues of the Newsletter and being extremely stingy in spending the money. On page 9 and 10 of this newsletter, is a list of members who have paid their dues.

New WEB Page for the University of Windsor Effective February 2, 1998, the University has a new WEB page. The Retirees Association Newsletter and other information can be found under News and Coming Events and then under Campus Media.

Retirees Bursary Fund - I am pleased to echo the pleas in previous editorial column requests to contribute to the Bursary Fund. It's certainly a matter of great pride for the Association to have accumulated over $ 35,000 in such a short time. Contributions are payable to "University of Windsor-Retirees' Bursary Fund" and addressed to the Office of Student Awards, University of Windsor, Windsor, ON, N9B 3P4- Please Mark envelope - "Attention of Mr. Orville Houser, Director of Awards". Datta Pillay

The Association

The Retirees' Association (Faculty,Librarian, Administrator) at Windsor was formed in 1990, to give a unified voice to retirees; to provide a bridge for communication with the University; to encourage social contact among the retirees; and to open a few doors through which retirees could continue to contribute to the University of Windsor.

Thus the Association is meant to fill what could otherwise be a void in the lives of retirees possible isolation from the University and from their former colleagues; and possible lack of understanding of vital pension and health issues that affect them directly.

There are only two meetings of the full membership per year: in the spring and the fall. An informal social committee arranges several other events per year dinners, plays, picnics, and so on all of which are paid for by those who take part. The Association encourages smaller special interest groups to form as occasion and their interests warrant. Because of extreme economy of operation, dues have been kept at the level of $10 per year. This includes five issues of The Retirees' Newsletter .
