Assessment is the collection of data about student achievement, using a variety of means and procedures and it comes before evaluation which is the making of an educated judgment or decision on the basis of the data collected in the assessment process.

The Ministry of Education and Training (and the Commom Curriculum) state four things about the assessment and evaluation of students.

1. Assessment of student learning is an essential part of the Ontario curriculum and effective classroom practice.

2. Teachers need to use a wide variety of appropriate assessment methods.

3. Evaluating and reporting student achievement is the job of the teacher, who must consider the special needs of individual students and work closely with them and their parents.

4. The evaluation of school programs should lead to their improvement and should be based on school-board and provincial standards.

The Windsor Board of Education and others recognize that:

  • assessments must be ongoing and gathered in a systematic manner. Teachers must have an assessment plan, and it must be shared with students at the start of the program. The assessment strategies that the teacher uses must not be a mystery to the student.
  • assessment and evaluation must be primarily concerned with evidence of growth. Evaluation strategies should provide both the student and teacher with practical; information and insights into the student's progress. Once those insights are gained there needs to be resulting actions.
  • assessment practices and evaluation strategies must be selected in terms of program goals and learning outcomes. They need to measure more than low level skills and content memorization.
  • assessments used in formulating a student's evaluation must reflect more than a collection of test results. The wider the variety in the forms of assessment, the more likely the evaluation will reflect the true progress and the achievement of the student.
