Morphology Oscillospira guilliermondii
CELLULAR
Staining Gram negative The cells freqently contain much polysaccharide which gives a reddish to mauve colour with iodine
Morphology extremely large filamentous rods (3-6 microns in diameter x 10-40 microns long) with rounded ends. Closely spaced cross walls divide the rod into disk shaped cells not more than 2 microns long.
Motility motile by lateral flagella. Exposure to air abolishes the motility
Specialized structures appear to have endospores. No one has observed germination of the endospores and it is not known whether the suspected endospores have the characteristics of spores from other genera. An endospore, about 2.5 x 4 microns in size, which lies longitudinally in the rod and occupies as much space as several disk shaped cells may be formed. The spore is refractile and resists cold stains.
