Annotated
Bibliography (10%)
I will provide you with a starting list of references which you will expand. Each reference will be listed and accompanied by a sentence or two to give a summary of its main thesis. You will also submit a copy of the pdf file of each article so that we can warehouse them centrally.
Some hints regarding reference retrieval - you have to start immediately.
Seminar
(10%)
It will be important to the success of the project that we each have a good overview of what the other is doing. We will each give a seminar describing our specific sub-topic. These seminar will last no more than 12 minutes, and will reserve 3 minutes for questions. (It is surprisingly hard to deliver such a compact talk, cover the details, and yet remain comprehensible). Aim for your talk to be understood by a well educated lay person, not a science specialist.
Essay First Draft
(no grade) and Reference Binder (10%)
Present your topic in simple language that will be both engaging (not academic) and understood by an interested non-specialist. The essay should be between 2000-6000 words but it can be longer if needed, and it will be thoroughly referenced. You will submit both an electronic as well as a paper copy. Use the word processor to select an automatic "Line Numbering" feature so that your reviewer can easily draw your attention to specific points. You will start assemble a portfolio of highlighted reference papers that will be numbered and marked to indicate where each point you cite is backed up in the primary literature. This highlighted reference will again be submitted (for keeps) with the final assembled chapter.
Peer
review (10%)
You will submit a short peer review for two papers. This will involve making spelling and grammar corrections, as well as identifying statements that are inelegant or unclear.
Final Edited Essay (20%)
Your final essay draft will be submitted via Turn-it In.
Chapter Assembly
(10%)
This group assignment will be to assemble sub-sections or related chapters into coherent form that avoids redundant and repetitious introductions, and that presents the material simply and effectively. You will also submit a list of three potential referees.
