UWINDSOR HOSTS MEETING OF COUNTRY’S BRIGHTEST MINDS AT
CANADA-WIDE SCIENCE FAIR
TheUniversityof Windsor hostedmore than 450
delegates fromacross the country
at theCanada-
Wide ScienceFair that took placeMay 9-16, 2014under a
national spotlight.
Top young scientists from acrossCanada livedon
campus during theweek, and enjoyed the opportunity to
exhibit their projects.
The fair highlights included free public viewingof the
projects followedbyopening ceremonies, all in the St.
Denis fieldhouse.
While on campus, delegates participated inUWindsor-
sponsored science activities onMay 12 as part of Campus
Science InvestigationDiscoveryDay. Participants chose
from topics ranging from cancer research, physics,
mathematics, chemistry, engineering, andwater research
andhad a hands-onopportunity to see the type of work
actually takingplace inUWindsor labs.
TheCanada-Wide ScienceFair takes place every
May in a different Canadian city. YouthScienceCanada-
affiliated regional science fairs apply tohost the fair up to
four years in advance.
$3.5 MILLION IN FEDERAL SUPPORT FOR UWINDSOR SCIENCE AND
ENGINEERING RESEARCH

ResearchCouncil of Canada
allowsUWindsor
researchers topursue their lines of inquiry, says the recipient
of a$210,000DiscoveryGrant announced in June.
AaronFiskBSc ’91,MSc ’95, aprofessor in theGreatLakes
Institute forEnvironmentalResearchandCanadaResearch
Chair inTrophicEcology, also receiveda further$110,000 fora
shallowdraftboat toconductworknear toshore.
“This fundingwill allowmy research team to study
themechanisms andprocesses that shape theaquatic
ecosystems of theGreat Lakes andArctic,” he said.
“Ultimately this researchwill contribute toprotecting
thevaluableecosystem services theyprovide, ensuring
Canadians continue toenjoyandbenefit fromour vast
aquatic resources.”
Dr. Fisk’s awardwas part of $3.5million forUWindsor
researchers announcedon campus byEdHolder,Minister of
state for scienceand technology.
Those funds includeDiscoveryGrants,Discovery
Accelerator Supplements, AlexanderGrahamBell Canada
GraduateScholarships, PostgraduateScholarships and
Postdoctoral Fellowships.
“Our government is providing the right kindof help to
push the frontiers of knowledge in scienceandengineering
andensureCanada’s leadership for years to come,”Holder
said. “In sodoing,wearedeveloping, attractingand
retaining theworld’smost talented researcherswho carry
out the scientific research that creates jobs andprosperity
and improves thequalityof lifeof Canadians.”
UWindsor presidentAlanWildemanextended
congratulations toall theUniversity’s researchgrant
recipients.

research lab.Weidl is shown calibrating themass spectrometer used
here todetermine the nitrogenand carbon stable isotope ratios in
