UWINDSOR CHANCELLOR NAMED TO ORDER OF CANADA

appointments to theOrder of
Canada
announced in June byGov.
Gen. David Johnston.
Lumleywill be invested as a
member of the order—one of the
country’s highest civilianhonours—at
a ceremony tobe held later this year.
The honour recognizes outstanding
achievement, dedication to the
community and service to the nation,
inLumley’s case,most notablyhis tenure as federal
industryminister.
Alsonamedamember of theorder
was formerUWindsor facultymember
RamonaLumpkin. Nowpresident of
Mount SaintVincentUniversity,
Dr. Lumpkin servedasUWindsor dean
of continuingeducation from1992
to1997.
JohndeChastelain, a senior advisor
to theUniversity’s JerusalemOld
City Initiative and former chief of the
CanadianDefence Staff, was named a
companionof the order. Amongother
honoureeswere filmdirectorDavidCronenberg, astronaut
ChrisHadfield and satirist RickMercer.

Aboost inbase fundingof $7,700peryearallowed
theUniversityof Windsor tohost theannual research
communicationevent, oneof 13projects to receivemonies
thisyear from theStrategicPriorityFund (SPF).
Thecompetition requiresgraduate students todescribe
their researchand its significance toa layaudience in three
minutes.TheUniversityof Windsorhasparticipated for the
past twoyears—MHKcandidateYasinaSomani qualified for
the2014national finals.
AlisonSamson, directorof graduateacademic services,
says theprogramprovidesvaluableexperience for students:
“The formatof the three-minutepresentationshelps the
contestants learn tocommunicate the importanceof their
workandmake it intelligible to thepublic.”
She says thenew fundingwill cover costs likeprizemonies,
marketingexpenses, a reception forparticipants, and the travel
costsof UWindsor champions to theprovincial finals.
