Changes on Campus
New President, New Vice-President, Academic? , New Academic Structure
Dr. Bill Jones Vice-President, Academic since September 1991 has decided to step down from
his position to allow the new president to choose a new team of administrators to work with him.
Dr. Jones made a great contribution to the University in difficult times of budget cuts and
controversial restructuring process. We extend our good wishes to him.
New Academic Structure:
Those of you who retired a few years ago, and for some who live outside the Windsor-Essex area,
you may not recognize the face of the Campus with new buildings, changes in Senior
Administration, Academic Structure and Programs that have taken place.
For some years the Provincial Government has been stressing accountability in the Ontario
University System, which in turn resulted in numerous Commissions and Reports.
The University of Windsor had its share of Task-Force Committees and Reports since 1991.
First, we had the Nelles Report (H.V. Nelles, Academic Visitor-from York University,
appointed in September 1991) to advise on the Mission Statement of the University and
Planning Procedures", which was submitted in December 1993. This report recommended the
formation of a Senate Strategic Planning Task Force Committee chaired by Dr.Dennis Tuck,
which concluded its report in January 1995 and in turn recommended the formation of another
Strategic Renewal Committee (SRC) Chaired by Dr. Emily Carasco to review the present
academic structure and recommend a new organization. Yet another Report of the Strategic
Planning Task Force, Administration and Services was prepared by Professor Richard Price
(Chair) on January 1995 to reorganize the administrative side of the University. As a result
numerous positions were eliminated and many areas consolidated.
The SRC report which faced tremendous opposition on campus was adopted with a narrow
margin in the Senate on April 26, 1996. The eight(8) Academic Faculties and the Graduate
Faculty have been consolidated into four Colleges: College of Engineering and Science
College of Business Administration, Education and Law
College of Graduate Studies.
Each of these colleges is headed by an Executive Dean, in addition to the Deans of Business
Administration, Education, Engineering and Law.
Similarly, many small departments were consolidated into larger Basic Academic Units of 20
faculty or more.
In the interests of space the details of merger of academic departments is left out for a future issue.
