Retirees Groups Go On Trips
Day Trip to Somerset Collections Mall
On Thursday, March 11th seven members and spouses travelled to Somerset Collections Mall, Big Beaver Road and Coolidge, Troy, MI. This upscale mall is architecturally impressive. It occupies both sides of Big Beaver with an overhead moving sidewalk joining the two sides. The group spent the morning shopping (or window shopping the mostly exclusive stores), gathered for lunch at the café in Nordstrom's department store, browsed some more afterward and returned to Windsor just before the afternoon rush hour.
Detroit Institute of Arts - April 15th (Gordon Parks Exhibit)
Eleven members interested in a trip to the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA)on Thursday, April 15th contacted Bob Chandler (969-4118 or e-mail: bobgc@uwindsor.ca) or Bob Whitehurst (735-6134 or email: rwhite@uwindsor.ca). The group got to DIA at about 11:00 a.m., to see the Gordon Parks exhibit. After a pleasant lunch returned to Windsor by late afternoon.
These day trips get organized "by chance" (usually by Bob Whitehurst, our member "in the know" about things stateside) and plans may not appear in The Retirees' Newsletter. Announcements will be made on UWFLAR-L (our e-mail list) but if you do not have e-mail and would like to be telephoned about such trips give Bob Chandler (969-4118) or Bob Whitehurst (735-6134) a call and we'll make up a telephone list of interested persons.
Memorial Service for Dr. Derrick Tracy
Over hundred colleagues, friends and relatives of the Late Dr. Tracy, Professor Emeritus-Department of Economics Mathematics & Statistics, assembled at the Katzman Lounge in Vanier Hall on Friday, March 12, 1999 at 7.30 p.m. for a memorial service. Rev. Don McKay from the Campbell Baptist Church served as Master of Ceremonies and led the memorial service. Several colleagues, friends, former students and community leaders paid tribute to Dr. Tracy. The President of the University, Dr. Ross Paul also attended the service.
Following the service there was a reception organized by the family for the guests.
Membership Drive A Tremendous Response
In January President Cunningham wrote a letter to a number of fellow retirees encouraging them to join the Retirees' Association and strengthen it to serve the retirees better. The Executive Committee is overwhelmed at the response and wishes to express its sincere thanks to all the new members and to those who have rejoined us.
Membership in the Association five years ago in 1994 was 80 at this time of the year. Today after ten years our membership is 162 which is more than double.
Traditionally, the membership list is published in the February issue of the Newsletter. In view of the enlarged list and to provide opportunities for members to reconnect with colleagues and friends, the Editor decided to publish the list again in this issue of the newsletter.
