The Newsletter

The Retirees' Newsletter is put out by the Faculty, Librarian Administrator Retirees' Association of the University of Windsor, five times per year: -- in February, April, June, October and December.

Its main purpose is to inform our retirees on matters of direct interest to them - such as their pensions, benefits, association activities, etc. and, equally, to provide a channel for retirees to keep in touch with each other and with outside groups, including the Faculty Association and the University.

The Newsletter welcomes from readers their comments, arguments, contributions and creative work.

President Ross Paul Meets with Retirees Association Executive

This was the first time that a President of the University of Windsor met with the Executive Committee of the Retirees' Association. During his brief visit he made the following observations:

Dr. Paul appreciated the opportunity to meet with the Retirees' Association Executive Committee on February 23, 1998.

1. At the outset, he asserted that we should have procedures to deal with people as they attain retirement age and celebrate their success. He also indicated that they have a lot of experience and knowledge of the institution, which makes them valuable resource people.

2. As a newcomer to the campus, he claimed that the retirees' have a historical perspective, insight and views of the University that he lacks and hence needs lot of advice from a group such as the retirees association.

3. He was particular that retirees are treated with respect and courtesy and that they do not leave the institution with bitterness, because of unfavorable conditions and treatment prior to retirement. He said that he would be upset if the colleagues showed disgust and seemed overly anxious to get rid of them. He wished to be notified if any Department Head or Dean is guilty of such action, then he would personally speak to them and see to it that there is redress.

4. Dr. Paul believes that with academics, work and career should not come to an abrupt stop. But it should be carefully planned with pre-retirement seminars, have procedures in place for smooth transition to retired status and finally there should be a centrally organized social occasion to celebrate their success. He thinks that they still have a role to play.

5. He conceded that it is important for retirees to have their benefits and health issues addressed and they have reasonable access to university facilities.

6. He was pleased to note and commended the Retirees' for setting up a Bursary Fund to be awarded to the University of Windsor students

7. He suggested that he would like to meet with the Retirees' Executive Committee 2 or 3 times a year. He offered to circulate a white paper he is preparing for our comments.

The meeting adjourned at 11.45 a.m.
